The Box Scene Project and BAYCAT, an organization that empowers and employs youth and young adults to produce digital media that tells their unique stories, are teaming up to host a Q&A session on the state of LGBT entertainment media representation. Tickets are available now for the event featuring panelists Lea DeLaria (Orange is the New Black), Amy Fox (The Switch), Crissle West (The Read), Sean Maher (Firefly), Dylan Marron and Jasika Nicole (Welcome to Night Vale).
The Box Scene Project started as an amateur fan run fundraiser to win a charity auction for a Glee script which contained an advertised but unaired romantic scene between fan favorite couple Kurt and Blaine. The group managed to raise $14,000 to win the script and grabbed the attention of show creator Ryan Murphy who released the scene of Blaine giving Kurt a promise ring to YouTube, one of the few cut scenes Glee has ever released to the public. The group is now expanding to projects outside of the Glee world and has to date raised over $130,000 for charitable organizations including Young Storytellers Foundation, Project Angel Food and BAYCAT through the passion of fans.
Get your tickets now for "Spotlight on Diversity: A Conversation & Celebration of LGBT Media Representation," which will be held at the Robert Frost Auditorium in Culver City this Sunday, August 17. Guests will also enjoy musical performances from Kim Tillman and Glee stars Dominic Barnes and Curt Mega. The evening will see the launch of The Box Scene Project's Mirror Scholarship & Fellowship and the presentation of the group's first Citizen Spotlight Award to Amelia, whose Huffington Post piece "When My Son Met His 'Boyfriend,' Darren Criss" went viral last year.
