Supreme Court issues stay on Virginia's marriage equality ruling

The U.S. Supreme Court stayed a ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit that found Virginia's ban on marriage for same-sex couples to be unconstitutional. This ends hopes that marriage equality will begin in Virginia anytime soon.

The Supreme Court issued the stay after defenders of the ban and Virginia Attorney General Mark R. Herring asked for it. Herring believes the ban is unconstitutional, but wants the Supreme Court to rule that it is unconstitutional before marriages begin the state.
