In honor of Bisexual Awareness Week, GLAAD launched glaad.org/BiWeek2014, where you can learn about the bi community, bi erasure, notable bi figures, and find resources for media. From September 21-27, GLAAD is recognizing the bisexual community through the social media campaign #BiWeek, developed collaboratively with GLAAD and leading bi advocacy organizations. There are new ways for bi, trans, and ally communities to get involved every day. Read more here.
Transparent star Jeffrey Tambor spoke on the TODAY Show about GLAAD's Board of Directors' Co-Chair Jennifer Boylan, who served as an adviser to the series. Transparent is a groundbreaking series that follows a Los Angeles family as Maura (Jeffrey Tambor) announces her transition to her kids and ex-wife. Watch the clip here.
On the four year anniversary of the death by suicide of Tyler Clementi, Sean M. Kosofsky, the Executive Director for The Tyler Clementi Foundation, shared a guest post on GLAAD's Newsroom. The post is a tribute to how the Clementi family turned a personal tragedy into a public call for action. Read more here.
GLAAD is sharing photos and stories from the QueerFest in St. Petersburg, Russia. Despite last-minute venue cancellations and harassment by anti-LGBT activists, QueerFest was able to open on time. GLAAD is sharing the reporting and photos from festival organizers, which has subsequently been covered in outlets including The Advocate, Towleroad, and Joy My God. GLAAD has a continued partnership with on-the-ground advocates in Russia. Read more here.
Stephen Snyder-Hill and his husband, Joshua, came by GLAAD's New York office to discuss his new memoir, Soldier of Change: From the Closet to the forefront of the Gay Rights Movement. U.S. Army General. GLAAD interviewed and filmed the couple for an original video. Snyder-Hill was booed on national television after submitting a video to a Republican primary debate following the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell and asked about spousal benefits to legally married gay and lesbian soldiers. After the crowd's harsh response, he quickly became well-known and an LGBT advocate. Read more here.
Advocates in Venezuela reached out to GLAAD's Spanish-Language Media Director Monica Trasandes recently and asked us to create video presentations they will share at an upcoming conference. Jonathan Rodríguez, President and Founder of Organización StopVIH, asked us to tape a half-hour informational session for journalists and another for community advocates interested in best practices for covering the LGBT community, which he will then present at a conference in October. Rodríguez is concerned both about an uptick in hate violence as well as defamation in media.
