Following GLAAD's campaign and public outcry urging Dear Prudence columnist Emily Yoffe to improve her advice to bisexual readers, Slate's syndicated writer did just that. Yoffe got the message about affirming and recognizing the bi community, and passed it on to a reader when Yoffe acknowledged bisexuality as a lived identity and encouraged visibility in safe spaces. GLAAD has joined 13 Members of Congress, led by Congressman Mike Honda of California and over 20 organizations, in a letter to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The letter asks the FCC to ensure that online filtering software used at federally-funded schools and libraries does not prevent access to sites with important resources for LGBT community. GLAAD participated actively in #BiWeek to raise awareness about the bisexual community. GLAAD created an original video of bisexual New Yorkers telling their stories at the iconic Stonewall Inn. We also shared 8 things you didn't know about bisexuality, and highlighted the bi community's voices in a #MyBisexualityIs round-up. In a stand against the anti-LGBT Values Voter Summit, GLAAD signed an open letter that was published Friday in the Washington Post and The Hill asking Republican officials to dissociate themselves from the groups behind the Values Voter Summit. Additionally, GLAAD offered questions that the media should be asking speakers and attendees. Over the course of the summit, GLAAD shared the Commentator Accountability Project of the dozens of speakers. Read more here.
Results from GLAAD's survey about representations of the transgender community on television were covered in a Hollywood Reporter article, in which GLAAD's Director of Entertainment and Sports Media, Matt Kane was quoted. According to the 2002-2012 survey, the trans community was severely underrepresented and negatively portrayed. The Hollywood Reporter piece, "Transgender TV Takes the Spotlight," focuses on the new series, "Transparent," which GLAAD Board of Directors Co-Chair Jennifer Finney Boylan advised. Read more here.
