While there has been a welcome increase in transgender characters in film and television in the last five years, it is important to recognize the TV series and movies which have included trans people in their stories over the past several decades. Explore the interactive timeline below for a look back at some notable highlights of trans-inclusive TV and films from the 1970s to now.
This morning, GLAAD released the third annual Trans Images on TV report looking back at the 13 new trans-inclusive episodes of scripted programming that have aired since November 2013. In a small improvement, 46% (6) of the 13 episodes tracked were considered defamatory. This is a drop of 8% from the combined previous two reports.
These reports are released as part of Transgender Awareness Week (November 14-20) to raise visibility of trans people and stories. The week is capped by Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR), an annual observance on November 20 that honors the memory of those whose lives were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence.
