'Love is Strange,' 'Dear White People' and more pick up Spirit Awards nominations

The nominees for the 30th Film Independent Spirit Awards were announced this morning and the list includes honors for several LGBT creators and inclusive films. Winners will be announced at the 30th Film Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday, February 21, airing live on IFC from 2pm PT/5pm ET.

The Ira Sachs film Love is Strange picked up four nominations total, including one in Best Feature. Love Is Strange stars John Lithgow and Alfred Molina as Ben and George, newlyweds who have been together for decades. George loses his teaching job when word of their marriage reaches his boss and the couple are forced to live apart while they search for a new home they can actually afford. Their lives are further complicated by the tensions and dynamics of their new living arrangements. Both Lithgow and Molina are nominated for their roles in Best Male Lead and Best Supporting Male, respectively. Out writer/director Sachs and Mauricio Zacharias are also nominated for Best Screenplay.

Dear White People is nominated in Best First Feature and out writer, director and producer Justin Simien is nominated in Best First Screenplay. The comedy centers on four Black students (one of whom is gay) at the fictional Winchester University and their encounters with racial politics in the weeks leading up to a "black themed" party where white students don blackface, afro wigs and more.

Obvious Child also picked up a nomination in Best First Feature, one of two nominations for the film about an unemployed stand-up comic dealing with an unplanned pregnancy after a one night stand and the choice to have an abortion. The film also features Joey, another comedian and the gay best friend of lead character Donna.

Out writer, director and actress Desiree Akhavan is nominated in Best First Screenplay for her film Appropriate Behavior about a woman struggling to find a balance between her identities as a Persian woman, a bisexual and a hip Brooklynite. Test, which tells the story of a young gay dancer living in San Francisco during the early days of the AIDS epidemic, is nominated for the John Cassavetes Award given to the best feature made for under $500,000. Out filmmaker Xavier Dolan's Mommy is nominated in Best International Film.

Winners will be announced at the 30th Film Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday, February 21, airing live on IFC from 2pm PT/5pm ET.
