This morning Ansel Elgort and Eva Longoria announced the nominations for the 21st Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards and the nominees include several out performers or characters and LGBT-inclusive films and series. The Screen Actors Guild Awards, the only show with winners selected solely by actors and their peers, will air live on TNT and TBS Sunday, January 25 at 8pm
The Alan Turing biopic The Imitation Game picked up three nominations including Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture and an Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role nomination for star Benedict Cumberbatch. The Grand Budapest Hotel, which featured Ralph Fiennes as bisexual hotel concierge M. Gustave., is also nominated in Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. Mark Ruffalo scored a nomination in Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries for his portrayal of Ned Weeks in HBO's The Normal Heart.
In television and streaming series, out actor Jim Parsons is nominated in Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series. Parsons was also nominated as part of the cast of The Big Bang Theory in Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series. Eric Stonestreet, who plays Cameron Tucker on Modern Family, is nominated alongside Parsons in the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series category. Uzo Aduba picked up a nomination in Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series for her work as Orange is the New Black's Suzanne "Crazy Eyes" Warren. Tatiana Maslany scored a nomination in Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series; she plays several clones on BBC America's Orphan Black including bisexual scientist Cosima and transgender con man Tony.
LGBT-inclusive series Downton Abbey, Game of Thrones and House of Cards all received nominations in Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series, while Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Modern Family and Orange is the New Black picked up nominations in Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series.
Unfortunately, Amazon's critically lauded freshman comedy Transparent missed out on any nominations, though that was notably also the case with the similarly hailed Orange is the New Black last year. Hopefully by next year, SAG voters will manage to catch the terrific show and Maura.
