In May of 2013 Brazil legalized same-sex marriages. This past Tuesday, December 9, civil registration data was released by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics or IBGE by its Spanish initials.
It showed that within the remainder of that same year over 3,700 marriages were celebrated. Of those marriages, 52% were between women and 48% were between men.
Before the legalization, same-sex couples were only allowed to enter into a status called "stable unions." The "stable unions" were recognized as marriages in May of 2011. Between 2011 and 2013 over 1,200 stable unions were registered.
The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics also stated that overall, marriages increased by 1.1% in 2013. In addition, there was also a decrease of divorces by 4.9%.
