The fan-voted 2015 People's Choice Awards air January 7 on CBS and kick off award season. Out actors Chris Colfer, Jim Parsons, and Jesse Tyler Ferguson all picked up nominations in Favorite Comedic TV Actor, while Matt Bomer scored a nod in Favorite Cable TV Actor. Ellen DeGeneres is nominated in Favorite Daytime TV Host - she’s won the category the past three years – and out musicians Sam Smith and Sia also got nods. LGBT-inclusive series nominated include Faking It, Scandal, Grey’s Anatomy, Pretty Little Liars, Jane the Virgin, Orange is the New Black, How to Get Away with Murder and more! The 72nd Annual Golden Globes follow on January 11 on NBC, hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. British film Pride, which follows a group of gay and lesbian activists who decided to support the UK miner's strike in the 1980s, is nominated in Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical. Another British film, the Alan Turing-biopic The Imitation Game, picked up five nominations including Best Motion Picture – Drama and a Best Actor nod for Benedict Cumberbatch’s portrayal of gay codebreaker and computer pioneer Turing. Amazon’s streaming series Transparent is nominated in Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy and star Jeffrey Tambor also picked up a nod in Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Comedy or Musical for his performance as Maura, a transgender woman coming out late in life. The 21st Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, the only show with winners selected solely by actors and their peers, closes the month on January 25 simulcast on TNT and TBS. The Imitation Game scored three nominations. Several actors were nominated for their portrayals of LGBT characters including Mark Ruffalo as Ned Weeks in HBO’s The Normal Heart, Eric Stonestreet as Cameron Tucker on Modern Family, Uzo Aduba as Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren in Orange is the New Black, and Tatiana Maslany who plays bisexual scientist Cosima and transgender con man Tony among others on BBC America’s Orphan Black. The NAACP Image Awards will air on TV One on February 6 and celebrate outstanding achievements by people of color in arts as well as those who work to promote social justice through their creative efforts. Trans actress and advocate Laverne Cox is nominated in Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her portrayal of trans inmate Sophia Burset on Orange is the New Black. Out actor Guillermo Diaz picked up a nomination in Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his work on Scandal, and out director and writer Justin Simien is nominated in Outstanding Writing in a Motion Picture (Theatrical) for Dear White People. The 57th Annual Grammy Awards air live on CBS Sunday, February 8 and honor the best in music. Out British singer Sam Smith leads the pack with six total nominations, including the “Big Four” categories – Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist. Out country singer Brandy Clarke is also nominated in Best New Artist as well as Best Country Album. Other LGBT nominees include Sia, Lady Gaga, A Great Big World, John Waters and more! The 30th Film Independent Spirit Awards air live on IFC February 21. The Ira Sachs film Love is Strange picked up four nominations total, including one in Best Feature and Best Male Lead and Best Supporting Lead for stars John Lithgow and Alfred Molina respectively. Dear White People is nominated in Best First Feature and out writer, director and producer Justin Simien is nominated in Best First Screenplay. Obvious Child also picked up a nomination in Best First Feature and out writer, director and actress Desiree Akhavan is nominated in Best First Screenplay for her film Appropriate Behavior. The 87th Annual Academy Awards hosted by Neil Patrick Harris and produced by Craig Zadan and Neil Meron will close Hollywood’s award season live on ABC February 22, nominees will be announced next Thursday, January 15. The Writers Guild Awards, held February 14, will continue to roll out nominees throughout January. The first wave included nominations for streaming series Transparent and Orange is the New Black which each garnered three nods.
