Every week, The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBT-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.
1) Patrick Stewart stars as a distinguished gay dance teacher that is targeted by a mysterious couple looking to interview him in Match, which opens in theaters today. An adaptation of Stephen Belber's Broadway play, the movie also features Carla Gugino and Matthew Lillard.
2) Great news! Not one, but two beloved LGBT-friendly families in television will be around for at least one more year. Showtime has announced that Shameless, its renowned comedic drama will be back for a sixth season. Likewise, ABC Family has ordered a third season for groundbreaking drama The Fosters.
3) There may be no such thing as too much Ellen. In addition to the announcement that she will be producing a hidden-camera prank show in which Wendi McLendon-Covey will be directing celebrities via an earpiece, her new reality competition Ellen's Design Challenge will premiere this month. The show, in which six furniture designers will compete against one another in weekly tasks, starts January 26 on HGTV.
4) Starz has picked up the upcoming TV movie, The Dresser, with mega-stars Anthony Hopkins and Ian McKellen. The film tells the story of the relationship between a fading actor (Hopkins) and his dresser and right hand (McKellen), set during World War II.
5) HBO has announced plans for a comedy special for out comic Tig Notaro, her first ever. In addition, they have set February 14th as the release date for Rosie O'Donnell's standup event Rosie O’Donnell: A Heartfelt Stand-Up, inspired by her recent near-fatal heart attack.
6) Rock band Sleater-Kinney has released a promo video for their new single "No Cities to Love." Featuring an array of celebrities like Ellen Page and Evan Rachel Wood, the single is the title track of the band's upcoming album, set to release on January 20th.
7) Adam Lambert has come a long way since his Idol days. After going on a world tour with the surviving members of Queen, Lambert is poised to release his newest album early this summer. It will be the first one in his new contract with Warner Bros., as well as newfound partnership with renowned songwriters Max Martin and Shellback.
8) The Writers' Guild of America has announced the nominees for its Outstanding Achievement in Writing for Videogames award, which include The Last of Us: Left Behind. This DLC for the smash hit 2013 game The Last of Us, which revealed a love story between main character Ellie and her best friend Riley, will face-off against Alien: Isolation and two installments of Assassin's Creed. The winners will be announced February 14th.
9) Lightspeed is a science-fiction digital magazine that is currently running a Kickstarter campaign to publish a special issue completely written and edited by LGBT creators. Although they have already reached their initial goal, additional contributions will allow more authors to have their stories published. Rewards for backers include free subscriptions, digital prints and dinner with the editors.
