Opera singer and LGBT ally Joyce DiDonato lent her voice to The Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village, delivering a message of equality and commemoration. Performing Henry Purcell's "When I am Laid in Earth," Donato dedicated her performance not only to the LGBT community, but specifically to Mark Carson, a gay man who was shot merely blocks away from Stonewall two years ago. In response to this act and other similar acts of injustice, DiDonato's performance at this historic venue provides a message of hope for the LGBT community. DiDonato knows that this continues to be a conversation worth having, that work must continue to be done:
"It shouldn't happen anywhere. It tells me that we're not done talking, and we are not done working for people to comprehend what equality is about and why it is important."
Featured in the audience of this moving performance were playwright Terrence McNally and marriage equality advocate Edith Windsor, who DiDonato said made the performance even more personal. Watch below:
