The GLAAD Wrap: Laverne Cox on 'The Mindy Project;' music videos from Kelly Clarkson, Sam Smith; 'Family Fortune' and more!

Every week, The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBT-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.

1) Romcom Boy Meets Girl opens in New York City this weekend and rolls out to theaters in select cities through the month. The film follows three twenty-somethings living in Kentucky: Robby who is forced to face his true feelings for his best friend, a trans girl named Ricky, when she strikes up a relationship with her co-worker Francesca who is lonely as she waits for her Marine fiancé to return from the war. 2) The Frameline Competition Fund has announced the six recipients of their annual Frameline Completion Fund grants to finish film and video projects about LGBT stories.  This year the organization awarded $25,000 total and recipients include an as-yet untitled documentary about trans child Coy Mathis whose school had barred her from using the girls’ restroom, Jenni Olson’s The Royal Road documentary which premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, the Turkish documentary Blue ID and more.

3) Laverne Cox will guest star in an upcoming episode of FOX’s The Mindy Project. She will play a cousin of Nurse Tamra Webb who helps Mindy get her confidence back after she learns she is pregnant. Cox has also recently guest starred on MTV’s Faking It and Bravo’s Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce.

4) ABC has given a pilot order to the semi-autobiographical comedy Family Fortune from out comedian Fortune Feimster who will star, write, and co-executive produce with Tina Fey. Family Fortune is about a popular gym teacher in North Carolina who comes out of the closet as her happily divorced parents also reveal that they are sleeping together again.

5) Kelly Clarkson released the video for her new single “Heartbeat Song” which features the love stories of several couples, including one gay couple who we see meeting, dating, and ultimately getting married. The track is part of her new album Piece by Piece, out March 3.

6) Angel Haze dropped the new single “Candlxs” from her upcoming three-song EP In the Winter of Wet Years this week. The track was inspired by her relationship with model Ireland Baldwin and the single cover art is a picture of the two painted by Haze herself. Check out “Candlxs” below.

7) Ahead of this weekend’s 57th Annual Grammy Awards, out singer Sam Smith has dropped the video for his new single “Lay Me Down.” The video starts with Smith at a funeral surrounding by mourners before fading back in time to him getting married to his partner in the same church. Smith is nominated for six Grammys and will perform on stage, airing live on CBS Sunday at 8pm.

8) Tickets are available now for Flame Con, New York City’s first LGBT comic convention. The June 13th event is hosted by Geeks OUT, who funded the day through crowdfunding efforts on Kickstarter which soared over the set funding goals. Get your Flame Con ticket now!

9) The Millenia Scope Entertainment Foundation is hosting their first annual Millenia Scope Gala honoring LGBT entertainers, stories, and allied creators at Los Globos in Los Angeles on February 22. Find out more and get tickets at the MSEF website.

10) The team behind the documentary Sidney & Friends about the transgender and intersex community in Nairobi, Kenya is looking for funding help to complete their film. The film features interviews with six members of the local community sharing their stories. Find out more at the Sidney & Friends Kickstarter page.
