Boy Scouts of America to re-evaluate anti-gay ban
Sources confirmed last week that Boy Scout officials have proposed a new policy -- which could be voted on as early as 2013 -- that would allow local chartering organizations to decide whether or not to accept gay youth and leaders. The proposal comes after Eagle Scout Zach Wahls delivered more than 275,000 signatures to the National Annual Meeting of the Boy Scouts of America, calling on the Scouts to end its history of discrimination and reinstate Ohio mom Jennifer Tyrrell, who was ousted as den leader of her son's troop because she's gay. GLAAD worked in national media to share Jennifer's story in outlets like The Associated Press, The New York Times, MSNBC, CNN and dozens more. Read more.
Isis King becomes American Apparel's first-ever transgender model
GLAAD worked with clothing giant American Apparel to release a new set of equality tees for LGBT Pride Month. In a company first, American Apparel featured an openly transgender model -- America's Next Top Model contestant and equality advocate Isis King. GLAAD worked with American Apparel to cast for the ad campaign, which also feature four current and former GLAAD staff members. Read more.
State Department brings overseas journalists to GLAAD
GLAAD staff had the extraordinary opportunity to meet, speak with, and answer questions from a group of seventeen foreign journalists who cover LGBT issues in their home countries. Reporters from Uganda, Moldova, Nigeria, Singapore, Chile, India, Guyana, and ten other nations joined us in GLAAD's New York offices. We were one of several stops on a tour of the American LGBT media landscape including the Washington Blade, that was organized and sponsored by the U.S. State Department. Read more.
