Every week, The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBT-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.
1) This week the critically acclaimed Australian independent film 52 Tuesdays will open in the U.S. for a limited release. The movie follows the journey of sixteen-year-old Billie as “her mother reveals plans for gender transition and their time together becomes limited to Tuesday afternoons.” The film chronicles these weekly visits in a unique experiment of structure. 2) Roadside Attractions has acquired US distribution rights for Roland Emmerich’s upcoming film Stonewall. The movie follows a young man’s (Jeremy Irvine) coming-of-age story against the backdrop of the Stonewall Riots of 1969 and is set for a late 2015 release. Emmerich recently received GLAAD’S Stephen F. Kolzak Award, presented to an openly lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender media professional who has made a significant difference in promoting equality.
3) The newest VOD platform for Breaking Glass Pictures has just released a new slates of LGBT-themed films. Some of the movies available to rent or purchase are Last Summer, a coming-of-age story about two high school sweethearts spending their last months' together before leaving for college; Breaking Through, a documentary revolving around successful LGBT activists; and thriller mystery The Dark Place, about a man who comes back home to confront his past. 4) Out fashion designer Tom Ford is attached to direct the movie Nocturnal Animals, the story of “a woman named Susan who receives a book manuscript 'Nocturnal Animals' from her ex-husband, a man whom she left 20 years earlier.” The film is an adaptation of Austin Wright’s novel Tony and Susan and follows both the marriage and the novel within. This is Ford’s first time behind the camera since 2009’s A Single Man about a college professor struggling following the death of his partner.
5) Carnival Films, the production company behind PBS sensation Downton Abbey, has announced that the series will end after its upcoming sixth season. “With this show we always try to get our timing right. Our feeling is that it’s good to quit while you’re ahead,” chief executive Gareth Neame said in a statement. The ensemble cast includes closeted underbutler Thomas Barrow (Rob James-Collier).

Trans actress Trace Lysette has been cast as a regular in NBC’s upcoming drama pilot The Curse of the Fuentes Women. The series - if picked up - will follow the lives of three generations of Fuentes women, and how their lives change when a mysterious young man emerges (Adam Canto) mysteriously from the sea. Lysette will play Gloria, a trans hostess at the café owned by the Fuentes family. She can currently be seen in Amazon’s critically acclaimed series Transparent which received the GLAAD Media Award in Outstanding Comedy Series at the 26th Annual GLAAD Media Awards.
7) Out musician Ricky Martin has released the music video for “Disparo al Corazon” the second single off his latest Spanish album, A Quien Quiera Escuchar. The video features snippets of same-sex weddings melded with Martin's reflection in a mirror. You can check out the video below:
8) Filmmaker Dante Alencastre is currently seeking funding for his documentary Nelly Queen: the Life and Times of Jose Sarria. The film is an exploration of the life and significance of Jose Sarria, the first openly gay American to run for office in 1961. It will include personal footage as well as interviews with close friends and acquaintances. You can make donations or check out more information about the project on the Indiegogo page.
