The UN Assistant Secretary-General Ivan Šimonović and the UN Human Rights office have #GotYourBack. They posted the following photo on Twitter on Friday, with both #GotYourBack and #ATuLado.

Ivan Šimonović, the Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights (holding the blue sign at the center of the photo), has been a supporter of the LGBT movement since at least July 2010. Advocating for the LGBT rights to be human rights, Ivan Šimonović is setting a great example. Coming from Croatia, a country where voters backed proposals to ban same-sex marriages in a referendum in 2013, Šimonović is standing up for minority rights so that no-one's happiness or choices are threatened.

The United Nations High Commission on Human Rights, and the UN as a whole, have long been supportive of the LGBT movement. In 2013, the office launched Free & Equal, an unprecedented global public education campaign for LGBT equality, aiming to raise awareness of homophobic and transphobic violence and discrimination, and encouraging greater respect for the rights of LGBT people. Preceding the 2014 Sochi Olympic Games in Russia, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon addressed the International Olympic Committee's general assembly, urging for action in defense of the LGBT community.  During the period prior to the 2014 World Cup, UN Human Rights Commissioner Navi Pillay spoke about the significance of LGBT World Cup players coming out, and urging closeted players to come out.

Human Rights Commissioner Prince Zeid sported a purple tie, while Secretary General Ban Ki-moon wore a purple tie and purple socks for Spirit Day in October of 2014.

Join Ivan Šimonović and the UN.  Take a stand for LGBT people by participating in GLAAD's #GotYourBack or, for Spanish speakers, #ATuLado campaigns. Take a photo, post it online, and challenge your family and friends to do the same
