This weekend, join fellow marriage equality supporters and people of faith as the question of marriage equality stands before the U.S. Supreme Court. The National Weekend of Prayer, a multi-faith prayer service, vigil, and procession will take place in Washington D.C. and nationwide From April 24 -26. The Unite for Marriage partnership strives to elevate visibility of committed couples and their families in the media and to amplify the bipartisan support for marriage equality. Some of the events supported by the partnership this weekend include a multi-faith service for the freedom to marry that will be held on Sunday, April 26, at the National City Christian Church in Washington, D.C. Vigils and prayer services including a moment of intention focusing on the justices, attorneys, plaintiffs, and couples involved in the cases will also be happening over the weekend. Finally, a gathering will come together on the steps of the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday, April 28, the day of oral arguments to end this exciting Weekend of Prayer.
All over the country, Unite for Marriage is coordinating and supporting over 100 local organizers, advocates, and allies during its Weekend of Prayer to show the wide national support for marriage equality. Statistically, a report released by the Williams Institute this week shows that in states that allow the freedom to marry, support grows faster as opposed to states that exclude LGBT couples from marrying. Another separate poll conducted by CNN shows that 63% of Americans support the freedom to marry, which extends to majority support in every region of the country. With the U.S. Supreme Court oral arguments happening on April 28, Unite for Marriage is working to make a strong case in the court of public opinion about why marriage equality matters and how national marriage discrimination is harmful.
