Miley Cyrus launches Happy Hippie Foundation; says not all her relationships have been "straight, heterosexual ones"

This week pop star and actress Miley Cyrus launched the Happy Hippie Foundation dedicated to rallying young people to "fight injustice facing homeless youth, LGBT youth and other vulnerable populations." Homelessness disproportionally affects LGBT youth with nearly 40% of homeless youth identifying as LGBT with family rejections being the most common reason LGBT youth experience homelessness. The campaign launched on Facebook with the debut of "#HappyHippiePresents: The Backyard Sessions" with rocker Joan Jett and Cyrus performing a track called "Different," check it out below.

Homelessness also disproportionately affects transgender people. According to the 2011 National Transgender Discrimination Survey, nearly 1 in 5 (19%) of transgender people have been homeless at some point due to their gender identity. Of those who have experienced homelessness, more than half (55%) say that they were harassed by shelter staff or residents. Almost a third (29%) were denied access to housing all together. The statistics also vary depending on race: 41% of black transgender respondents report facing homelessness at some point. Cyrus also posted another Backyard Sessions this week, a cover of Dido's "No Freedom," dedicated to trans teen Leelah Alcorn who tragically died by suicide last year.

Happy Hippie's current project involves creating digital support groups for LGBTQ youth to connect with each other, provide direct referrals for legal and medical help, and provide resources for families, schools, and religious communities. These online communities will allow youth to build confidence and self-esteem as they connect with people who are going through or have been through the same things they are experiencing.

During the campaign launch, Cyrus also spoke with the AP about why she is so passionate about helping LGBT youth and she added that not all of her previous relationships were "straight, heterosexual ones." She also spoke to Good Morning America about the launch, saying, "I feel completely like I'm not tied to a gender." Cyrus has long been outspoken about LGBT rights including posing for the NOH8 campaign in 2011, penning an article for Glamour.com about her support of marriage equality, tweeting support of Disney Channel's first out characters on Good Luck Charlie, and more recently using social media to galvanize her fans to take action against Indiana's anti-LGBT bill and speaking in support of Bruce Jenner.
