Laverne Cox introduced GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis at the 26th Annual GLAAD Media Awards on Saturday at New York's Waldorf Astoria. In her introduction, Laverne spoke of the continued work for acceptance for both LGBT people, particularly transgender people and people of color.
"I'm proud to stand alongside GLAAD and all of you tonight to accelerate acceptance, not only for the LGBTQ community -- but across all communities. From Baltimore to Ferguson to right here in New York City. We cannot and will not stand for violence or harassment against people of color."
Ellis contrasted the gains made against the continued violence and harassment LGBT people face. She discussed a Harris Poll that found deep levels of discomfort with interacting with LGBT people. The results of that poll is framing GLAAD's strategy of accelerating acceptance for LGBT people across the US and around the world.
"The work ahead, my friends, is uncharted and unscripted. While GLAADʼs research reveals an uncomfortable America, we have the best team and programs to enlighten, educate and move public opinion," said Ellis. "The LGBT community must take on a new frontier, from the promise of equality to the reality of acceptance."
