Created in 2004 to commemorate the World Health Organization’s decision in 1990 to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder, IDAHOT has become the single most important date for LGBT communities worldwide. It is celebrated in more than 120 countries, including 37 where same-sex acts are illegal, with over 1600 events reported from 1280 organizations in 2014. It is estimated that around 17% of all annual discussions on Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia are generated around this day.
In many countries, IDAHOT has over the years evolved from a one day event into a full week or a month of action. Once more this year activities have already started. In Africa for example, None on Record, a digital media organization that works with LGBT communities across the African continent and in the Diaspora, has produced a video series featuring LGBT youth and allies from all across the region. Spreading the messages of hope for the next generation, None on Record invites people from around the world to send videos of support to LGBT youth in Africa. These messages will be launched online on May 17th 2015.
In only 5 days thousands of advocates and LGBT allies form around the world will celebrate the International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia in an attempt to draw the attention to the violence and discrimination experienced by LGBT people internationally. As part of GLAAD's Global Voices program, which works to accelerate LGBT acceptance across the globe, GLAAD will participate and celebrate IDAHOT together with thousands of diverse groups and individuals. As IDAHOT 2015 approaches, we give you 17 reasons, one every day, why May 17 matters.
