On Monday, Thomas Roberts appeared on The Rundown with Jose Diaz-Balart and discussed being honored at the GLAAD Media Awards in New York City over the weekend. Roberts discussed how things have changed for LGBT people since he came out in 2006. He also thanked the team that works on his MSNBC show. Watch the video:

On Saturday, Roberts accepted the Vito Russo Award from Wonder Woman actress Lynda Carter. The Vito Russo Award, named after a founding member of GLAAD and the author of The Celluloid Closet, is presented to an openly lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender media professional who has made a significant difference in promoting equal rights for our community.

"That is why 'coming out' is so empowering," said Roberts. "For those of us with the privilege to work in media our viewers or listeners deserve to know who we really are, because there is nothing to be ashamed of when this is your truth."

Roberts has tirelessly advocated for LGBT equality and acceptance by highlighting LGBT issues and often shining a spotlight on stories that mainstream news outlets frequently overlook. On his show MSNBC Live with Thomas Roberts he has highlighted stories about LGBT communities in the South, LGBT athletes, marriage equality, bullying and discrimination, and amplified stories from the trans community. Roberts has been a strong supporter of GLAAD's annual anti-bullying #spiritday campaign and even hosted a Twitter chat with GLAAD CEO and President Sarah Kate Ellis where he gave advice to LGBT youth and facilitated discussion. Roberts also made history with OUT@NBCUniversal, an LGBT and ally employee group that became the first organization to march under an LGBT banner in New York's St Patrick's Day Parade.

Carter, most known for playing Wonder Woman in the 1970s TV series of the same name, has been an outspoken ally to the LGBT community. She was also Grand Marshall of the New York Pride Parade in 2011, held over the weekend that marriage equality passed in the state.

Previous Vito Russo Award honorees include George Takei, Anderson Cooper, Ricky Martin, Rosie O'Donnell, Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, Alan Cumming, Tom Ford, and Cynthia Nixon.
