Every week, The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBT-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.
1) The new documentary, The Yes Men are Revolting is being released on June 12 and is the third film from activist pranksters Mike Bonanno and Andy Bichlbaum. The film follows the pair as they embark on a challenge to draw attention to corporate crimes against the climate and humanity with their signature stunts, but also examines the real people behind the act, including the openly gay Bichlbaum. 2) Wolfe Productions has just acquired the North American rights to All About E. The Australian film follows the story of E (Mandahla Rose), an Arab-Australian DJ who one day finds a bag of cash outside of her apartment. E, along with her gay best friend Matt (Brett Rogers), hit the road and eventually find themselves seeking shelter with E's ex-girlfriend, Trish (Julie Billington). The film will screen at Frameline and OutFest Festival this summer. Wolfe plans on releasing the film to DVD in the beginning of 2016. 3) Katherine Heigl's same-sex marriage dramedy, Jenny's Wedding, has just been acquired by IFC Films and is set to release on July 31. The film follows Jenny Farrell (Heigl), who is out to everyone except her family. Her two worlds collide when Jenny decides to marry and start a family with her fiancée Kitty (Alexis Bledel), who her family still believes is just her roommate. The film will have its world premiere at OutFest in Los Angeles on July 10. You can follow the film through the Jenny's WeddingFacebook Page.
4) The first theatrical poster for the film Boulevard has been released and it features Robin Williams front and center with the tagline, "It's Never Too Late to Make a U-Turn." Williams in his final feature film performance plays Nolan Mack, a man in a convenient marriage who is forced to confront the reality of his secret life when he meets Leo (Roberto Aguire), a troubled young man, on his drive home. The film will make its theatrical release in New York on July 10 and will expand to other locations such as Los Angeles on July 17. Check out the Boulevard trailer below.
5) Universal is moving forward with Pitch Perfect 3 after the success of Pitch Perfect 2. There is no news yet about which cast members will revive their roles for the upcoming installment, but hopefully out Bellas team member Cynthia-Rose (Ester Dean) will make an appearance. Director Elizabeth Banks has not stated whether she will be back for the third film, but Kay Cannon, the writer on the first two films, is talking with Universal about writing the script for the upcoming installment.
6) Logo TV will launch six new documentary films on LGBT trailblazers in the beginning of June. The docs are part of Logo's new documentary division focusing on untold LGBT stories. The first film to premiere on Logo and PBS will be Out In the Night, which tells the story of The New Jersey 4, a group of African-American lesbians from New Jersey who were convicted of assault after getting into an altercation with a man who physically and sexually threatened one of the women. 7) The Canadian teen drama, Degrassi: The Next Generation, will live on! Netflix and Canada's Family Channel have announced a new 20-episode series titled Degrassi: Next Class. This news comes after TeenNick decided to end the long-running Degrassi series next month. The show has presented groundbreaking portrayals of LGBT teens throughout its 14 seasons, and won a GLAAD Media Award in 2012 . Degrassi: TNG will end with a two week series finale starting in July, followed by an hour long look back special on Friday, July 31.
8) The documentary Faith is looking for funding to cover equipment rentals, post-production costs, and festival costs. The story of Faith follows the titular subject as she flees persecution in Kenya for being a lesbian and creates a new life for herself along with a family in the United States, but later sees her proudly return to Kenya with her wife and her son. Filmmakers hope to bring awareness to LGBT issues in Kenya and to give hope to others through Faith's story. Learn more about the documentary Faith at the film's Kickstarter page.
