On Monday, June 29, 2015, ABC Family will air two back-to-back shows featuring young trans men - which is exciting, as transgender men are still largely invisible in mainstream media.
First at 8:00 p.m. ET on The Fosters, trans character Cole (played by out trans actor Tom Phelan) returns to tell Callie, Jude, and Connor that he's organizing an LGBTQ prom. Cole is happy to be creating an inclusive prom, but he doesn't have a date, so Callie offers to attend the prom with him. The Fosters received the award for Outstanding Drama Series at the 25th Annual GLAAD Media Awards.
Then at 9:00 p.m. ET on Becoming Us, Brook's brother Lathan chooses to disclose to Carly that he is a transgender man. Lathan has appeared in prior episodes, but viewers did not know that he is also trans. From the preview, it seems that Lathan has also met someone who may be his soul mate.
Lathan will be live tweeting and answering questions during the episode's airing at 9 p.m. ET. To ask him a question, tweet at @LathanToland using #BecomingUsChat
Thanks to ABC Family for continuing to include transgender characters and people in its scripted and reality programming!
