In a statement of interest filed Monday, the U.S. Justice Department sided with transgender teen Gavin Grimm, who filed a lawsuit against his school district in Virginia claiming the district's restroom policy is discriminatory. Grimm is arguing that he should be allowed to use the regular male restrooms in accordance with his gender identity instead of "alternative" facilities specifically for trans students. The Justice Department agreed with Grimm, also arguing that the school's policy violates Grimm's rights under Title IX. According to the Department of Justice, "there is a public interest in ensuring that all students, including transgender students, have the opportunity to learn in an environment free of sex discrimination."

The lawsuit is still ongoing as of this point, and sees unspecified damages and an order allowing Grimm to use the male restrooms.
