Trans* Awareness Project (TAP) is a new campaign at the University of Minnesota that aims to increase understanding and respect for the transgender and gender non-conforming communities. Co-founded by Kirsten Eid and Devyn Goetsch, and in collaboration with the University of Minnesota's Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Ally Programs Office, the Transgender Commission, University Libraries, and the Queer Student Cultural Center, the poster and digital media campaign features images of transgender and gender non-conforming people, along with text that shares each individual's thoughts on their identity.

TAP began with inspiration and support drawn from Washington, DC's Transgender and Gender Identity Respect Campaign, a ground-breaking government funded campaign created by the Office of Human Rights that focuses exclusively on the betterment of transgender and gender non-conforming people. The DC campaign has shared its ads on social media, and in bus shelters and other public spaces around the city.

Those involved with TAP have been spreading the mission its by passing out over 9,000 fliers to students on campus, as well as people in the Twin Cities. TAP co-founder Kirsten hopes the project will grow even larger, bringing more community involvement, and opening the door for future advocacy around on campus issues such as student safety. TAP also plans to create a guide book that will help other groups create similar campaigns about transgender awareness.

With endeavors like the Trans* Awareness Project, We Happy Trans, and the I AM: Trans People Speak video campaign, it's clear the transgender community and its allies are fighting hard to ensure the equal and fair treatment of transgender people in all sectors of society.
