Saturday night, the Imperial Court of New York honored GLAAD at their seminal event, Night of a Thousand Gowns. The event raised money for the critical and culture-changing work of GLAAD through fashion, song, and more sequins than can be counted.
The Imperial Court of New York has a long history of supporting the LGBT community. The Night of a Thousand Gowns is more than just a dazzling display of regal glamour, it is an opportunity to support the LGBT community's advocacy and service organizations. The evening featured performances by pop superstar Taylor Dayne, as well as appearances from Real Housewives of New York's Aviva Drescher and winner of RuPaul's Drag Race: All Stars, Chad Michaels.
The Imperial Court chose to benefit GLAAD, as well as GMHC, a volunteer-supported and community-based organization that provides prevention and care services to men, women and families that are living with, or affected by, HIV/AIDS.
The program provided glimpses into GLAAD's work and mission of telling the stories of LGBT people, and lifting up pro-LGBT voices in the media. Over the course of the past year, members of the Imperial Court have also had a visible, and stunning presence at GLAAD events.
The Imperial Court of New York bestowed the 2013 Imperial Diamond Award to Elvis Duran, the award winning host of the nationally syndicated Elvis Duran and the Morning Show. Since coming out in 2010, Elvis has been a strong supporter of LGBT causes, including GLAAD. The Imperial Diamond Award is ICNY's most prestigious way of recognizing a member of the greater community whose service to LGBT and HIV related causes is exemplary.
Emperor XXI Ritz Kraka & Empress XXVI Witti Repartee also crowned Wen-D Bouvier-Pinkhouse and Gracie Steeles as Emperor XXII and Empress XXV.
GLAAD staff were on hand for the festivities, including GLAAD's National Spokesperson, Wilson Cruz, who was knighted in a ceremony during the program. Other honorees included GMHC's Dr. Marjorie Hill and Gilbert Baker, the creator of the rainbow flag.
“Thanks to the dedication, talents and creativity of the members of the Imperial Court of New York, the Night of a Thousand Gowns has become one of the most entertaining LGBT events in New York City,” said GLAAD's spokesperson Wilson Cruz. “The ICNY not only raises critical funds for advocacy organizations, but sparks positive change throughout the year and we are proud and honored to be a part of this year’s annual gala.”
