GLAAD and members of the Los Angeles trans community met with editors and staff members at the Los Angeles Times for an honest discussion about issues that uniquely affect trans people in Los Angeles, and the LA Times' coverage of the trans community. The meeting stemmed from a problematic article published in the Los Angeles Times in February about the death of Cassidy Vickers, a trans woman who was brutally murdered. The LA Times acknowledged that there were issues with the Vickers article, and committed to an internal training on transgender issues, and asked GLAAD to review their internal style guide for transgender issues. GLAAD joined thousands to call on Smith College to end the school's policy that unfairly rejects the admission applications of certain trans women. GLAAD is calling on The Dove Foundation to revise its review of Love Free or Die, the award-winning documentary film about openly gay bishop Gene Robinson. The Dove Foundation refused to give Love Free or Die a "Family Approved" rating, because the film features a loving gay couple and their family. GLAAD is calling its members to support a petition to reverse the decision and say that LGBT families are "family approved." Read more.
GLAAD is continuing to work with students at Biola University in La Mirada, CA, after professor Erik Thoennes made inflammatory comment - equating having an LGBTQ identity with being a racist - at a school-sponsored panel on sexuality last semester. Audio of the event only recently surfaced. In response, openly-queer alumnus Jos Charles started a petition, demanding an apology from Dr. Thoennes and a commitment from the university to include pro-LGBT voices in all futures campus-wide conversations about sexuality.
