Join GLAAD at "Question One" Screening

The insightful and thought-provoking film, Question One, is becoming a ‘must see’ for marriage equality advocates across the country. GLAAD wrote a review of Question One just a year ago, when it first was released. The film follows both campaigns around Question One, which in 2009 was passed by voters to strip the state of Maine of marriage equality. Now that we are in full swing toward votes on marriage equality in Minnesota, Maryland, Washington, and even Maine once again, Question One has become a powerful tool for understanding what marriage equality advocates are up against.

In “War Room” style fashion, this acclaimed film takes a rare behind the scenes look at the recent same-sex marriage referendum campaign that took place in Maine in which the filmmakers were granted unprecedented access to BOTH sides of the campaign.

The film spends considerable time portraying the campaigns, the volunteers, and the motivations behind the people involved in both the “Yes on One” and “No on One” campaigns. However, the film provides one of the first and most in-depth glimpses of the strategy and the power of Frank Schubert, who has successfully led campaigns against marriage equality in several states, including Proposition 8 in California. During the film, you can see Frank Schubert and his underhanded tactics and messages undermine the supposed chairman of the “Yes on One” campaign, Mark Mutty.

Now, with Maine once again voting on marriage equality, as well as Minnesota, Maryland, and Washington, the tactics used in the Maine campaign are coming to light. Schubert and his campaign tactics have been profiled in the New York Times, and he has undergone scathing criticism for his profiting from this anti-equality work. Filmmaker Joe Fox has written about what he witnessed and how important winning marriage equality this November is for the country.

The tactics portrayed in Question One are still being employed in Maryland, Minnesota, Washington, and even yet again in Maine. Misleading advertisements have appeared in all four states. Claims of what marriage equality will and won’t do have distracted voters from the actual votes at hand. Supporters of marriage equality need to see this film in order to understand what tactics and arguments are being used. Question One has also been helpful at uncovering the deception and misinformation that is being used toward undecided voters.

This is also why GLAAD has launched marriage equality, state-specific profiles for the Commentator Accountability Project. Many leading state opponents to marriage equality will provide false, misleading, or extreme claims about LGBT people. It’s important for mainstream media, and the voting public to understand how out of touch these anti-LGBT activists are, even with voters within their own state.

GLAAD invites its members and friends for a special faith-based screening of the powerful new documentary on the battle for same-sex marriage, "Question One”, Tuesday, October 23rd at 7:00pm at The Chelsea Clearview Theatre in New York City. Featuring guest speaker, Reverend Pat Bumgardner of the Metropolitan Community Church of New York and Ross Murray, Director of GLAAD’s Religion, Faith and Values Program and the film’s director, Joe Fox.

CNN's Carol Costello declares she is "proud, card-carrying member" of so-called "gay gestapo"

Last week, CNN's Carol Costello hosted a segment about the anti-gay American Family Association's protest of Southern Poverty Law Center's "Mix it up at lunch day" - because of AFA's bizarre claim that encouraging kids to make new friends promotes some kind of "gay agenda."

Costello interviewed AFA spokesperson Bryan Fischer. But, like any good journalist, she wanted to give her audience the whole story, not just the parts that Fischer was comfortable discussing on national television. So she confronted him with a statement he had made claiming that the Nazis were, quite literally, gay.

Straight from Fischer's profile at GLAAD's Commentator Accounability Project (CAP), here's that claim again:

Hitler recruited around him homosexuals to make up his Stormtroopers, they were his enforcers, they were his thugs. And Hitler discovered that he could not get straight soldiers to be savage and brutal and vicious enough to carry out his orders, but that homosexual solders basically had no limits and the savagery and brutality they were willing to inflict on whomever Hitler sent them after. So he surrounded himself, virtually all of the Stormtroopers, the Brownshirts, were male homosexuals."

Needless to say, Fischer was less than thrilled with Costello's audience being made aware of the extent of his anti-gay animus. He also wasn't happy with her cutting the interview off when it was clear he was going to start making bizarre claims about the "health risks" of being gay.

So on his radio show, he called her part of the "Gay Gestapo." (Which is strange, because I thought Fischer believed the actual Gestapo was gay? Wouldn't this be redundant?)

Anyway, Costello responded with a smile. If the "Gay Gestapo" aims to provide an audience with context about a hate-driven anti-gay activist, and actively works to stop the spread of blatant misinformation, then she said she's a "proud, card-carrying member."

On Saturday, October 20, New York-based LGBT Faith Leaders of African Descent held a forum in Harlem, NY entited  “Empowering Ourselves: Using Faith as Our Anchor.” Through a series of prayers, group discussions and keynote addresses, Faith Leaders empowered their community members to challenge notions that their sexual orientation and spiritual and religious identity are mutually exclusive. Bishop Yvette Flunder of NoWedge 2012 and the founder of the City of Refuge United Church of Christ delivered the morning’s keynote and The National Black Justice Coalition’s (NBJC), Executive Director and CEO, Sharon Lettman-Hicks also delivered a powerful keynote speech during the afternoon, in which she encouraged the African American community to mobilize and “own your power”. This was also the strong message at this year’s OUT on the Hill sponsored by NBJC.

In addition, GLAAD worked in partnership with Faith Leaders to lead the group discussion, “We Tell Our Stories, You Tell Yours,” providing best pracitces for how LGBT people of faith can tell their stories within their communities and to the media.  The staff of Harlem Pride, community members, clergy, artists and educators attended the group discussion and were engaged to make significant social change in their local communities and among their families.

During the group discussion, the attendees were also able to preview a video project that Faith Leaders has launched, “Telling Our Stories.” Joseph Tolton, Dr. Wilhelmina Perry, Kevin McGruder and Electra Cummings are just some of the participants who have told empowering stories on camera and are spokespeople for the campaign. Faith Leaders will continue to distribute this among their constituency and beyond.

“As people of faith, we believe in the spiritual values of love, inclusiveness, and respect for all people,” a strong message that Faith Leaders continually pushes forward.

GLAAD applauds LGBT Faith Leaders of African Descent for their tireless work to send out fair and accurate images about the faith community, and their strong mission to empower the black community.

East Aurora, Illinois strips transgender protections from students on #SpiritDay

On Friday, while the rest of the country was going purple in support of LGBT young people on Spirit Day, the school board in East Aurora, Illinois was sending the exact opposite message to transgender students.

The board for the East Aurora School District 131decided on Friday to take away a new anti-discrimination policy that protected transgender students, just days after approving it. The board had passed the measure unanimously on October 15. The message sent to transgender students: "your well-being is not our concern." Or worse, "you are not welcome here."

Abbe Land, Executive Director and CEO of The Trevor Project said in a statement that rescinding the protections "would send a hurtful, stigmatizing message to all students, inflicting humiliation and empowering bullying. This is not the message we should be sending to our young people.”

(East Aurora School Board, image via ThinkProgress)

The board members caved to pressure put on it by the Illinois Family Institute, which has been labeled a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center. In its reaction to the October 15th vote, which protected transgender students, IFI said:

"This feckless school board has made a decision to accommodate, not the needs of gender-confused teens, but their disordered desires and the desires of gender/sexuality anarchists who exploit public education for their perverse ends.”

It's one thing for a hate group to call transgender young people "confused," "disordered," "anarchists" and "perverse." It's quite another for a school board to see that statement and give it a seal of approval. And it's not clear whether the board would have caved to this pressure, had the community been made aware of exactly who the Illinois Family Institute is. So where was the media during all this? Not doing its job.

On October 17th, the Chicago Sun-Times network only provided the Illinois Family Institute’s own description of itself:

IFI tags itself as an “independent non-profit ministry dedicated to upholding and re-affirming marriage, family, life and liberty in Illinois.

Chicago’s ABC 7 stated that the IFI “strongly opposed the district's new policy” but failed to provide any more information about the group, and CBS2 did at least call the group “conservative” but stopped there.

“Conservative” doesn’t even begin to cover the anti-LGBT hate promoted by the Illinois Family Institute and its parent organization, the American Family Association - which has also been designated as a hate group by SPLC.

IFI spokesperson Laurie Higgins has called being gay “evil,” has compared it to incest, and has said that supporting LGBT Pride is “implicitly … embrac[ing] heresy.”

AFA spokesman Bryan Fischer is even more extreme, having claimed: "Homosexuality gave us Adolf Hitler, and homosexuals in the military gave us the Brown Shirts, the Nazi war machine and six million dead Jews." Fischer also says that gay people are the single greatest modern threat to freedom of religion and conscience.”

This context is crucial to this discussion, and Chicago’s media completely failed to deliver it to its audience. Anyone who had not come into contact with the IFI before this story would have no idea that they were an extreme anti-LGBT organization that has been labeled a hate group, believes being gay is the same as incest, and is affiliated with an organization that believes the Nazis were gay.

GLAAD is working with advocates in Illinois and around the country on this story, and is reaching out to Chicago media to to ask the media to bring IFI's anti-LGBT history to light, and to urge a thorough investigation of how this decision was reached.

Hudson School GSA Supports LGBT Youth, Was Purple For #SpiritDay!

The Hudson School GSA in New Jersey joined the many students and millions of Americans who went purple for Spirit Day! Corey, the GSA’s president, shared why the independent school for grades 5-12, which also participated in GLSEN’s Ally Week and celebrated LGBT History Month, supports Spirit Day and how the GSA works daily to support LGBT youth and stand against bullying.

Corey writes, “Supporting the rights of all people, and fighting to end bullying and intolerance, are no-brainers for us, as is participating in Spirit Day. Although our [GSA] meetings are only open to students in grades 9-12, we realize that many students become aware of their sexual orientation and gender identity, and experience bullying, long before high school. As role models for the students in grades 5-8 at our school, we are in a unique position to reach out to them and further cultivate a safe, supportive, accepting community for them.”

“By leading anti-bullying workshops and lessons on LGBT issues in their classes, they gain much more than knowledge about the topics at hand. They also learn that we will not accept bullying and that we are committed to speaking out against it. Hearing this from high school students, whom they look up to and respect, impacts them significantly more than their teachers leading the same lessons. They are also eager to get involved in the GSA’s school-wide events and campaigns.”

“Spirit Day gives our community a chance to reaffirm our belief in our school’s motto of Courage, Compassion, and Commitment. Standing up to bullying, and supporting LGBT youth, are two causes we are deeply committed to, and we will never lose an ounce compassion for others no matter how much courage it takes.”

Out comedian, actress and talk show host Ellen DeGeneres was awarded the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor by The Kennedy Center on Monday night. The show will be broadcast on PBS next Tuesday, October 30 at 8:00 pm.

DeGeneres got her start as a comedy club emcee in her hometown, New Orleans, before landing her sitcom Ellen which aired from 1994 to 1998 on ABC. Her character became the first lead on primetime TV to come out as a lesbian in the April 1997 episode “The Puppy Episode.” The episode aired shortly after DeGeneres herself came out on the cover of Time. She was then one of the very first celebrities to be out in Hollywood.

“I did it because it was the right thing for me to do,” DeGeneres said Monday night about coming out on TV fifteen years ago. “It was the right thing for me to do to not live with shame. I happened to help a lot of people, and it happened to create a ruckus.”

Jimmy Kimmel recognized her coming out as a milestone, “For a lot of people, Ellen is their only [gay] friend. She’s there in their living room every single day.”

Sean Hayes went on to say DeGeneres made his show Will and Grace possible and paved the road for other shows that include out LGBT characters. “We didn’t have a voice, until there was you,” he said before launching into the song “Till There was You.”

A sentiment the Will & Grace cast shared with the press at the 10th Annual GLAAD Media Awards.

Glee star Jane Lynch also thanked her for paving the way. “I’m pretty darn sure I could not have the career I have, that I could not live as openly as I’ve lived, if it hadn’t been for you.”

The Mark Twain Prize for American Humor honors comedians who follow in Twain’s tradition of satire and social commentary. Past recipients include Steve Martin, Lily Tomlin and Whoopi Goldberg.

Watch Ellen DeGeneres: The Mark Twain Prize on PBS Tuesday, October 30 at 8:00pm.

Arro Verse, an out singer/songwriter, uses her musical talents to advocate for the LGBT community.

A Detroit native, Arro Verse began writing music at the age of 7, and is now gaining popularity in the indie music world. Arro almost never found a career in music. She was once criticized for not being able to read music. Feeling discouraged, she used her other passions of sports and media to attempt careers in sports medicine and television production. However, her love for music remained strong, and in 2007 she picked up her guitar for the first time in years. She's never looked back.

The multi-instrumentalist began to dabble in various genres, from rock to country to R&B and even children’s music. In 2011, Arro Verse won the RightOut TV award for “Best Video” for her anti-bullying song "Don’t Be My Boo Boo." The song, fusing rock and pop, appealed to people from different backgrounds and ages. Working on new music in the studio and performing at many venues in the Los Angeles area, Arro released “Love Follows Me” this year, receiving traction from many bloggers and music lovers. With momentum growing, and inspired by President Obama’s declaration of support for marriage for same-sex couples, Arro Verse recently released the song "Marry Me," which has garnered a lot of attention from the LGBT blogosphere.

"Marry Me" set Arro Verse up for her biggest project yet: The Marry Me Movement. This call for change is a cross-country venture that is committed to supporting marriage equality for same-sex couples through the intersection of music and sports. The first of many planned events, a softball game was held on Saturday, October 20th in Glendale, California. Funds raised during the game are going towards Marriage Equality USA and The Campaign for 20 Million More. The Marry Me Movement is also holding phone banks in support of R74, the referendum in Washington state that will grant marriage to same-sex couples.

Arro Verse is the perfect example of an artist who uses her musical talents for the greater good. Check out information on The Marry Me Movement here and watch the music video for "Marry me" below.

National Youth Pride Services Celebrates 9-Year Anniversary

Congratulations to National Youth Pride Services (NYPS)! Today, the organization celebrates its ninth anniversary. NYPS works with a coalition of the nation’s leading youth organizations to celebrate and “exceed the needs of African American youth.” Black LGBT youth around the nation have benefitted tremendously from the dedication of NYPS and we applaud that effort. Earlier this year in February, the organization was invited to The White House for the Emerging LGBT Leadership Summit. Please visit their website for a complete list of their national teams and programs, here.

Currently, NYPS is in Phase 1 of the National Strategy for Black Gay Youth. This groundbreaking program is dedicated to improving the education, emotional, physical, social and mental conditions of gay black youth. A dedicated assembly of youth leaders and organizations around the nation has signed on to the strategy, which aims to survey 2,500 youth and will be published nationally once the survey concludes.

Just recently, on October 19, GLAAD had the pleasure of working alongside NYPS for Spirit Day. Frank and NYPS showcased tremendous support, addressing significant issues for Black gay youth, particularly in creating a safe space where their race and LGBT identity can peacefully exist.

Frank writes,

“Today is a day we encourage people to stand up when you hear someone use anti-gay slurs ANYWHERE, ANY DAY, ANY TIME and ANY PLACE. Don’t just take this pledge on Spirit Day, take this pledge as a life long social justice activity.”

GLAAD has enjoyed a great relationship with NYPS and commends them on their accomplishments, tenacity and commitment to social change as a life-long social justice activity. We look forward to seeing the significant work that NYPS will put forth as it continues to empower and celebrate Black LGBT youth.

Happy Anniversary,

Social Media Helps Show Why Marriage Equality Matters in Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, and Washington

$
0
0

As November 6 approaches, advocates for marriage equality in Maine, Maryland, and Washington are working hard to ensure that ballot questions that would legalize marriage for gay and lesbian couples pass, while supporters in Minnesota work hard to ensure that inequality is not enshrined in their state constitution in the form of a ban on marriage equality.

Social media is playing a major role in the campaigns in the four states, with several ads being produced. However, videos are also being shared across social media platforms to motivate supporters and voters. We’ll list a sampling of them below:

Last year, Shane Bitney Crone lost Tom, his partner of six years, in an accident. Because he and Tom were not married, Shane was not allowed into the hospital to see Tom after the accident, he had no right to have a say in Tom’s funeral, and was banned from attending by Tom’s family. Had the couple been able to marry – something they had hoped to do – Shane would have had the opportunity to mourn the loss of the love of his life knowing that he was seen as more than Tom’s roommate. In response to his devastating experience, Shane posted a video on Youtube, called “It Could Happen to You,” describing the pain he suffered after Tom’s accident, and how marriage recognition could have mitigated some of his devastation. Now, Shane is supporting marriage measures in four states:

The Four is an effort to support marriage equality in the four states with ballot initiatives next month through digital media. Their content features artists, celebrities, and other familiar faces who support marriage equality. Supporters come from a variety of backgrounds, but every person featured believes that marriage equality is right for the United States, from 50 Cent to Laura Bush.

The Four, along with New Left Media, has also produced videos for each of the states in which marriage equality will be a ballot issue. The videos feature couples, some of whom have been together for over 35 years, as well as campaign volunteers and adult children of gay and lesbian parents talking about why marriage equality is important to them.

Personal stories can help undecided voters understand why marriage equality matters and why voters in Maine, Maryland, and Washington are hopeful that marriage equality will become a reality in their states, while supporters in Minnesota hope to avoid enshrining inequality in their state’s constitution. With under two weeks until the election, please share these stories of why marriage equality matters.

In recognition of National Coming Out Day,the National Council of Asian Pacific Americans (NCAPA) released a statement affirming support for LGBT equality, including: marriage equality, employment and student non-discrimination, and LGBT-inclusive health care. NCAPA is the country’s leading coalition of advocacy groups supporting Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders. Some groups that belong to NCAPA include the Asian American Justice CenterJapanese American Citizens LeagueNational Association of Asian American Professionals and South Asian Americans Leading Together

Husbands the web series is a comedy set in a world in which full marriage equality is achieved and follows Cheeks, a famous actor, and Brady, his baseball-star husband, as they learn to navigate newly-married life following a drunken wedding in Las Vegas. The series has earned itself a highly loyal fanbase that helped raise over $60K for the show’s second season, which included guest appearances from stars such as Joss Whedon (Avengers and Buffy director), Felicia Day, Amber Benson, Jon Cryer, Mekhi Phifer and others.

In the comic book version, the couple receives a mysterious present following their Vegas wedding that leads them on their thematic adventures. The first installment takes place in a super hero universe with Brady as “Light Fantastic” and Cheeks as “Chet Deckfin,” a vintage super hero and a bold reporter with his own secrets and agenda, respectively. Husbands the Comic will be exclusively in a digital format until March 2013 when the collection will be offered as a bound hardcopy. At a gala for the Human Rights Campaign, Hollywood film director Lana Wachowski was honored with the organization’s Visibility Award. The Hollywood Reporter exclusively shared Lana’s acceptance speech, in which she spoke at length about public visibility, challenged media narratives of transgender lives, and recounted experiences from her youth through to her current life with honesty, humor, and wit.

Lana ended her speech, saying, “I am here because when I was young, I wanted very badly to be a writer, I wanted to be a filmmaker, but I couldn’t find anyone like me in the world and it felt like my dreams were foreclosed simply because my gender was less typical than others. If I can be that person for someone else then the sacrifice of my private civic life may have value.”

Gay Boy Scout Delivers 400,000 Petitions and Speaks Out on Anderson Cooper 360

Last week, Ryan Andresen delivered more than 400,000 Chnage.org petition signatures to Mt. Dialbo-Silverado Boy Scout Council in Pleasant Hill. Today you can see Ryan and his mom speak out against the Boy Scout of America's ban on gay scouts and scout leaders with Anderson Cooper.

GLAAD was with Change.org, Ryan and his mom in NYC. Watch their interview with Anderson Cooper below:

Ryan was expelled from his local Boy Scout troop due to his sexual orientation and in spite of the fact that he’d served the troop for more than 12 years, completing every necessary requirement to become an Eagle Scout, he was unfairly denied his Eagle Scout medal.

Karen Andresen, Ryan’s mother started the petition to garner support for her son and overturn the decision. She stated,

“My son Ryan is my hero. He’s so incredibly brave, smart, and talented. It hurts me so much to watch Ryan suffer for being who he is, because to me, he's perfect.” She continues, “Ryan has worked for nearly 12 years to become an Eagle Scout, and nothing would make him more proud than earning that well-deserved distinction.”

Ryan took on a remarkable responsibility when he completed his capstone project by assembling a “Tolerance Wall” to address bullying. Unfortunately, his sexual orientation led to hurtful discrimination and removal from the Boy Scouts, where he had served proudly and diligently. You can find a copy of the letter that addresses his removal, here.

During the petition delivery and interview with Anderson Cooper, Ryan made it clear that he was not only representing himself, but other Scouts like himself, who also face discrimination and will continue to face discrimination if pracitices like this persist.

“In defending their hurtful policy against gay people, the Boy Scouts are pushing young men like me away-- young men who really need the Boy Scouts. I wasn’t the first person to suffer under this policy, and until the Boy Scouts change their policy, I won’t be the last,” said Ryan.

As it stands, the Mt. Diablo-Silverado Council defends their national ban on gay Scouts from participating. You can view Ryan's petition at Change.org.
