Tomorrow, New York City council speaker Christine Quinn along with Empire State Pride Agenda and members LGBT advocacy organizations, including the Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund (TLDEF), Callen-Lorde Community Health Center, and The Ali Forney Center will march on the steps of City Hall, in New York City. Following a spike in anti-LGBT attacks in the city, Quinn and advocates are gathering to call on Albany to pass the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act (GENDA). With the end of the legislative session quickly approaching, pressure is needed to ensure this bill is passed. Currently in New York, a person can be evicted or fired from their job due to their gender expression.
16 states plus Washington, DC have passed non-discrimination laws covering gender identity, and many more counties across the U.S. have similar protections.
