GLAAD released its sixth annual Network Responsibility Index (NRI), a report that maps the quantity, quality and diversity of images of LGBT people on primetime broadcast and cable TV.  For the first time TLC was included among the 10 cable networks tracked each year.  The network received an “Adequate” score with 20% of the hours of original programming it aired in primetime including at least one LGBT impression, and GLAAD was pleasantly surprised to find the seemingly conservative network included a wide range of LGBT people and stories.

The network reacted to their inclusion in the report and the score they received.  "We're honored to be included in this important and respected analysis of the LGBT community represented in media today,” said Amy Winter, TLC’s General Manager.  “TLC is always working to share the authentic stories of remarkable people living compelling lives, without discrimination or exclusion."

This past year the network included LGBT people on shows like NY Ink, My Collection Obsession and Extreme Couponing, as well as a variety of gay consultants and lesbian couples on the many bridal programs the network counts on its roster of shows.  For conservative viewers looking for fun wedding programs, seeing a same-sex couple expressing the same hopes and dreams about their big day as an opposite-sex couple can remind them that issues like marriage equality aren’t about politics or positions, but are ultimately about people.
