LGBT-Inclusive Shows Win Big at Critics' Choice Television Awards

Award recipients for the 3^rd Annual Critics' Choice Television Awards have been announced. Congratulations to all of the LGBT-inclusive shows and actors who were recognized.

Michael Cudlitz was awarded Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his role as gruff gay police officer John Cooper on TNT's Southland. Cooper is one of the best officers on the force and a very well integrated gay character in the show's universe. Click here to read more about Cudlitz's thoughts on the storyline for his character.

Sarah Paulson received the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Movie or Mini-Series for playing Lana Winters, a 1950s lesbian reporter on FX's American Horror Story: Asylum. Determined to reveal what's really happening inside a mental institution, Paulson's character faces electroshock and anti-gay "conversion therapy."

Steven Soderbergh's highly rated Behind The Candelabra, which aired on HBO, took home the award for Best Movie or Mini Series, with the film's star Michael Douglas also nabbing the award for Best Actor in a Movie or Mini-Series for his role as Liberace. Behind The Candelabra is based on the memoir with the same name, written by Scott Thorson, about his five-year relationship with Liberace.

Sundance's Push Girls tied for Best Reality Series with A&E's Duck Dynasty. Chronicling the lives of four women in wheelchairs, Push Girls has a character who dates both men and women on the show—27-year-old Tiphany Adams. "It's one of those things: There are way too many beautiful people in the world. I don't like to limit myself," Adams said. Check out an AfterEllen.com's interview with Adams here.

Other notable LGBT-inclusive award recipients include NBC's The Voice for Best Reality Series – Competition, FX's Archer for Best Animated Series, and HBO's Game of Thrones tying with AMC's Breaking Bad for Best Drama Series. Tatiana Maslany snagged Best Actress in a Drama Series for BBC America's Orphan Black and Zachary Quinto was named Best Supporting Actor in a Movie or Mini-Series for FX's American Horror Story: Asylum.
