Gay and lesbian couples across Rhode Island and Minnesota began exchanging 'I dos' on Thursday, as marriage equality laws took effect in both states at 12:01 am.

"I didn't expect to cry quite that hard," Cathy ten Broeke told CBS News after she and her longtime partner, Margaret, became the first same-sex couple married in Minnesota.

Marriage equality is now legal in 13 states (CA, CT, DE, IA, MA, MD, ME, MN, NH, NY, RI, VT, WA), as well as Washington, D.C.

"It's a joyous day for the LGBT community and our allies, as same-sex couples in Rhode Island and Minnesota finally have the same opportunity to make a lifelong promise to take care of and be responsible for the person they love," said GLAAD spokesperson Wilson Cruz.

A new Gallup poll released just this week shows that 52% of Americans support legalizing marriage equality in all 50 states.

For more than 25 years, GLAAD has been working to shape the media narrative around marriage for same-sex couples, helping to build support for full equality.
