This week, openly gay Puerto Rican featherweight boxer Orlando Cruz became engaged to his longtime partner José Manuel.
Cruz proposed to Manuel via video message on Facebook, saying in Spanish: “I want you to be part of my life and me be part of yours."
His partner accepted in a similar video message. “I accept marrying you because I love you and adore you,” Manuel said.
Orlando Cruz made history in 2012 when he came out, becoming one of the highest-profile athletes to ever be openly gay while competing. He has since become a role model for LGBT Puerto Ricans, athletes, and individuals from all walks of life, sending the message that you can be true to who you are and stay at the top of your game.
Cruz represented Puerto Rico at the 2000 Olympic Games and is currently ranked 1st by the World Boxing Organization as a featherweight. His feature interview in Telemundo sports highlight show Titulares Telemundo was nominated for a GLAAD Media Award this year.
