In an interview with CNN's Christiane Amanpour, director Roger Ross Williams explains how the anti-gay legislation recently enacted in Uganda can be traced back to the direct influence of American Evangelical leaders like anti-gay activist Scott Lively.
Williams' documentary film God Loves Uganda, which was released in theaters last year, examined how in recent years fundamentalist Evangelical activists from the US stirred up anti-gay hysteria in the country, eventually leading lawmakers to seek harsh punishments for LGBT people and their allies. A version of that legislation, which can punish repeat offenders with life in prison, was signed by Uganda's president this week amidst international outcry and condemnation. God Loves Uganda has garnered rave reviews since premiering at the Sundance Film Festival, and is a nominee for a GLAAD Media Award this year, along with another documentary about the plight of LGBT Ugandans, Call Me Kuchu, from directors Malika Zouhali-Worrall and Katherine Fairfax Wright.
