The annual Peabody Awards recognize outstanding TV programs, films, and other media formats telling groundbreaking stories with real social impact. This year's winners were announced yesterday on CBS This Morning with an awards ceremony hosted by Ira Glass to follow on May 19 in New York City. This year's Peabody's included wins for several LGBT-inclusive films, documentaries and series.
FX's The Bridge, ABC's Scandal, Netflix original series House of Cards and Orange is the New Black and BBC America's Orphan Black are among the Peabody winners with prominent LGBT-inclusive storylines. GLAAD Media Award recipient How to Survive a Plague also picked an award for its unflinching look at how the activists behind groups like ACT UP and TAG forced the medical establishment into action following its tragically stunted response to the HIV/AIDS crisis. HBO's documentary Six By Sondheim, which pays tribute to legendary Broadway composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim, took home a Peabody as well.
The Peabody Awards will be presented May 19 in New York City and air on Pivot TV.
