Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) student Andraya Williams of North Carolina is calling for CPCC to apologize for discriminating against her because she is a transgender woman. Williams was leaving a women's restroom on campus when a CPCC security guard interrogated her. The security guard questioned Williams about her gender, and then told her she was suspended until she could provide "medical proof" of her gender.
At a rally, Williams read a letter calling for the school to formally apologize, and that she be allowed to use the women's restrooms on campus. Williams also says that the school should updates its policies regarding transgender students, and that school staff should undergo sensitivity training. Campus Pride, an organization serving LGBT and ally student leaders and campus groups, launched an online petition calling for CPCC to apologize and take action for transgender safety on campus.
