In recognition of National Coming Out Day,the National Council of Asian Pacific Americans (NCAPA) released a statement affirming support for LGBT equality, including: marriage equality, employment and student non-discrimination, and LGBT-inclusive health care. NCAPA is the country’s leading coalition of advocacy groups supporting Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders. Some groups that belong to NCAPA include the Asian American Justice CenterJapanese American Citizens LeagueNational Association of Asian American Professionals and South Asian Americans Leading Together

In their statement, the Council acknowledged the importance of religious freedom and recognized similarities between the API and LGBT communities, saying

NCAPA knows the sting of discrimination based on religion, and supports religious freedom, and knows that LGBT people’s rights can and must be protected in ways that are consistent with freedom of religious expression.

The National Queer Asian Pacific Islander Alliance (NQAPIA), a national federation of local API equality groups, commended NCAPA on their blog shortly after the announcement:

NCAPA is the nation’s leading coalition of national advocacy organizations serving Asian Americans, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities. NQAPIA is proud to be a member of NCAPA and worked in solidarity with this coalition to issue this important statement.

Below are the seven LGBT policy platforms endorsed by NCAPA:

  • Marriage Equality and Family Recognition
  • Equal Treatment and Non-Discrimination
  • Data Collection and Disaggregation
  • Immigration
  • Education
  • Health
  • Housing and Economic Justice
