Every week, The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBT-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.
1) The new film Birdman, starring Emma Stone and Michael Keaton, opens in theaters today. The film follows an aging actor (Keaton) famous for once playing a superhero as he tries to re-launch his career with a Broadway play. Stone plays his estranged lesbian daughter, who struggles to reconnect as her father tries to recover his life, career and family.
2.) Dear White People opens in select theaters today and will roll out nationwide on October 24. The comedy centers on four Black students (one of whom is gay) at the fictional Winchester University in the weeks leading up to an annual frat party where students use blackface, afro wigs and more. Out writer, director and producer Justin Simien examines race, class and sexual orientation on liberal arts campuses in a generation that claims to be both "post-race" and "post Glee."
3.) The Mortal Instruments might be getting new life as a TV show. The young adult fantasy book series follows a group of teenage warriors including gay Alec and his on again off again warlock boyfriend Magnus Bane. Constatin Films has decided to turn the book series into a TV series following the disappointing box office results of the film version in 2013.
4.) Out singer Sam Smith has garnered two American Music Awards nominations, he is up for New Artist of the Year and Favorite Male Artist – Pop/Rock. 5.) Mary Lambert's debut feature length album Heart on My Sleeve was released Tuesday! Lambert has U.S. and Canada tour dates set through December, find a show near you. Check out her hit single Secrets below, Heart on My Sleeve is available now on iTunes, Amazon and Google Play.
6.) Neil Patrick Harris' new book Neil Patrick Harris: Choose Your Own Autobiography came out this week. Breaking from tradition, this book allows readers to choose what path NPH's life takes in the vein of the Choose Your Own Adventure children's book. It was also announced this week that Harris will host the 2015 Oscars, a first for him.
7.) PBS Digital Studios has animated a vintage radio interview between Liberace and KTRH Houston as part of their Blank on Blank series, which has Liberace talking about "peacocking" in men's fashion, how much he spends on clothes, his impoverished childhood and even what he would do as President. 8.) Electronic Arts and Bioware debuted the cinematic trailer for its upcoming video game Dragon Age: Inquisition. The game features several playable characters who are gay, lesbian, or bisexual, and takes players on a quest through a warring land filled with mages, dragons and chaos.
9.) Documentary L.A.: A Queer History is looking for help the largely unknown LGBT history of Los Angeles to the big screen. The film creators seek to showcase the history of out L.A. in a time before Stonewall and the film has even been awarded a certificate of recognition by Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti.
