Following yesterday's announcement of the annual SAG award nominations, this morning brought the list of contenders for the Golden Globes, which finally gave Amazon's Transparent one of its first big awards moments. Alongside were quite a few other LGBT-inclusive films and TV series, including welcome surprises like the terrific British film Pride.
Pride, which follows a group of gay and lesbian activists who decided to support the UK miner's strike in the 1980s, was nominated for Best Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical. In the Drama category, The Imitation Game continued picking up awards momentum with five nominations, including one for Best Picture. Benedict Cumberbatch was nominated for his leading role as gay codebreaker and computer pioneer Alan Turing in the film, which also received nods for best actress (Keira Knightley), Best Original Score, and Best Screenplay.
In the TV categories, the critically acclaimed streaming series Transparent was nominated for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy, as well as Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Comedy or Musical for Jeffrey Tambor's performance as Maura, a transgender woman coming out late in life. Orange is the New Black also got a best comedy series nod, along with cast members Taylor Schilling for best actress and Uzo Aduba for best supporting actress. Other inclusive series that received nominations included Downton Abbey, Game of Thrones, House of Cards, The Good Wife, and surprise nominee Jane the Virgin. Out actor Alan Cumming was also nominated for his supporting role on The Good Wife.
The Normal Heart received what will probably be some of its last nominations, including Best Miniseries or Motion Picture Made for Television, best actor for Mark Ruffalo's performance as AIDS activist Ned Weeks, and best supporting actor for Matt Bomer's role as the lover Weeks loses to the disease.
The 72nd annual Golden Globe Awards will air January 11 on NBC.
