ABC Family this morning announced a direct to series order for a new reality series My Transparent Life from Ryan Seacrest Productions. My Transparent Life centers on Ben, a teenager who learns that his parents are getting divorced at the same time he learns that his father will be transitioning. The show is described as "a generational story of a loving family and circle of friends supporting one another through this unfamiliar and unexpected situation."

"ABC Family is best known for its complex, loving and relatable family programming, and we are so proud to partner with Ryan Seacrest Productions to share Ben's incredible real-life story," said ABC Family president Tom Ascheim. "While Ben's family situation is unusual, the themes and coming-of-age issues are universal, and we think our viewers will find a real connection to them."

"At RSP, we love family stories, and we couldn’t be more excited that ABC Family is helping us share this heartwarming story of how an ordinary teenager grapples with a challenging and unexpected family situation," Seacrest said. "We feel audiences will find Ben’s story relatable on a number of different levels, because at the end of the day, family is family unconditionally."

ABC Family has a long history of LGBT-inclusive programming and this year earned their second "Excellent" rating in GLAAD's annual Network Responsibility Indexwhich maps the quantity, quality, and diversity of images of LGBT people on television. The network also boasts the only recurring transgender character in primetime scripted series for the 2014-2015 season with The Fosters' Cole played by trans actor Tom Phelan.

GLAAD's third annual Trans Images on TV report released last month found some improvement over the previous year's results when it comes to transgender representation on scripted television. This year, GLAAD reviewed 13 new scripted episodes with trans characters that have aired since November 2013. In a slight improvement, 46% (6) of the 13 episodes tracked were considered defamatory, a drop of 8% from the previous two reports. GLAAD also released an interactive "Transforming Images: Four Decades of Trans-Inclusive Entertainment" timeline highlighting notable trans characters and stories in films and television over the last four decades.

While no premiere date has yet been set for My Transparent Life, you can keep up to date with the series on their official Facebook page and on Twitter @TransparentLife.
