When I tell people I intern at GLAAD, the first think that comes up on their mind is why? Some of them directly ask, am I gay? The others walk around the topic ending up asking anyway, but being apparently uncomfortable. So let me say it clear here. No, I am not gay. I have never questioned my orientation and have always been interested in guys. So no, this is not some experiment or a journey to find my true self. I intern at GLAAD because I believe that everybody has the right to be who they are.
I was born and raised in the Czech Republic. Coming from an international background I assume that people are more different than the same. With my friends, we accept the fact that neither of our culture is superior or inferior to the other, they both are unique. This translates to people as well. Whether LGBT or not, people are created equal and they should be treated as such.
Being an international student I have to put up with a lot every day. Leaving the language and the immigration rules aside, there are people who underestimate me or look down on me for the sole reason of being different. This is not a good feeling. Just as I will never be able to hide my accent, LGBT people shouldn't have to hide their identity.
In its most recent report, Accelerating Acceptance, GLAAD revealed that approximately 1 out of 3 Americans still feel substantial levels of discomfort when around openly LGBT people. Being on the other side, not feeling any discomfort whatsoever, I feel very strongly that LGBT friends and family should be fully accepted members of society. This is the reason why I intern at GLAAD and this is the reason why I aspire to be the greatest ally.
