#ATuLado gains Spanish-speaking allies in #GotYourBack campaign
LGBT people and allies are voicing support for acceptance in Spanish and English as part of GLAAD's #GotYourBack campaign. Notable participation so far with #ATuLado, the Spanish-language equivalent, has included Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen of Florida, whose Twitter feed is full of positive responses, and advocates from the Caribbean, Mexico, Central and South America are scheduled to participate. MTV.com focuses on accurate transgender coverage
GLAAD's Senior Strategist Dani Heffernan met with MTV.com's editorial leadership team for a discussion about fair, accurate, and inclusive media representations of transgender people in both news and entertainment. While providing a brief history of transgender media images, Heffernan highlighted MTV.com's previous coverage of transgender stories, and provided resources and story ideas in order to ensure continuously well-rounded, quality coverage of the transgender community.
Univision strengthens transgender coverage for Latino viewers
GLAAD's Director of Spanish-Language Media Monica Trasandes and Strategist Janet Quezada coordinated with Univision's Director of Community Empowerment to do workshops on accurate ways to cover transgender people, issues, and terminology. The team will be doing these workshops in the coming months, and the workshops will be available to every Univision affiliate.
Intersex advocates correct and clarify Nightline news report
GLAAD's Director of Programs Ross Murray worked with the nonprofit, Advocates for Informed Choice, for a segment on intersex people that ran on Nightline, which aired last week. The segment was helpful to give intersex people visibility, but continued to perpetuate a problematic understanding of intersex people. In consultation with GLAAD, Advocates for Informed Choice reworked the video to provide further context and correct misrepresentations. Read more here.
Ugandan LGBT advocate Frank Mugisha explains state of LGBT people
GLAAD's Video & News Strategist Claire Pires interviewed Ugandan LGBT advocate Frank Mugisha for GLAAD's video series, GLAAD: All Access. Mugisha spoke openly about the state of LGBT people in Uganda, how his friend and mentor David Kato motivates him, and how viewers can help. The interview was picked up by The Huffington Post. Comedian Tig Notaro to host #glaadawards in Los Angeles
Tig Notaro will host the 26th Annual GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles at the Beverly Hilton on March 21, 2015. The Grammy-nominated comedian rose to national prominence after a 2012 stand-up performance at Largo, recorded and distributed by fellow comedian Louis C.K. The GLAAD Media Awards recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the LGBT community and the issues that affect their lives. The GLAAD Media Awards also fund GLAAD's work to amplify stories from the LGBT community and issues that build support for equality. Read more here.
Texas lesbian couple tells story of raising family
GLAAD's Director of Spanish-Language Media Monica Trasandes and Strategist Janet Quezada worked with Familia es Familia, the public education campaign that works toward LGBT equality within the Latino community. The team worked with them to pitch stories that came from a Town Hall Forum about marriage equality in San Antonio, Texas. The forum also featured LGBT ally US Representative Joaquin Castro. The team's efforts to connect with outlets resulted in two segments on both Univison and Telemundo that featured local lesbian couple Alex Galindo-Cantu and Irene Galindo-Cantu, who raised their daughter in Texas, but had to go to California to wed.
#GotYourBack allies continue to show support on social media
GLAAD is excited to see the great participation that has been happening surrounding the #GotYourBack campaign. Vine star Jeffrey Marsh brightens GLAAD office
Vine sensation Jeffrey Marsh stopped by GLAAD's New York City office this week to talk to GLAAD: All Access host Claire Pires about the viral star's advocacy and participation in GLAAD's #GotYourBack campaign. While at the office, Marsh took some time to shoot a Vine with GLAAD staffers to help promote the #GotYourBack campaign. Read more here.
Compelling Spanish-Language documentary on trans women gets second chance
GLAAD's Director of Spanish-Language Media Monica Trasandes and Strategist Janet Quezada met with Univision's Director of Community Empowerment to re-air the documentary Identidad sin fronteras about trans women, nominated for a GLAAD Media Award this year in the Outstanding Documentary (Spanish Language) category, because the first airing in DC had technical difficulties. Univision will re-air the newly edited documentary in the Washington D.C. area on Friday March 20th, 2015 at 11 p.m.
