The 42nd Annual Daytime Creative Arts Emmy Awards were presented yesterday and transgender advocate and actress Laverne Cox made history when the Logo special she hosted and executive produced, Laverne Cox Presents: The T Word, won the Emmy in Outstanding Special Class Special. Cox is the first trans woman to win an Emmy as an Executive Producer and The T Word is the first trans documentary to win an Emmy.

Laverne Cox Presents: The T Word looks at the lives of seven trans youth, who range from ages 12 – 24, and explores their individual journeys to overcome challenges such as bullying and anti-transgender violence. The documentary premiered on Logo and MTV last October the day after Laverne and members of the cast lit the Empire State Building purple for GLAAD’s #spiritday to support LGBT youth. Other winners at the 42nd Daytime Creative Arts Emmy Awards include Ellen DeGeneres whose talk show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, took home three Emmys including Outstanding New Approaches – Enhancement to a Daytime Program or Series. The Sara Gilbert-cohosted daily talk show The Talk picked up one award. Soap opera The Bold and the Beautiful, which recently kicked off a new storyline with Maya Avant (Karla Mosley) disclosing to viewers that she is trans, picked up eight Emmys. LGBT-inclusive soaps General Hospital and Days of our Lives won three and two Emmys, respectively. Web series The Bay The Series picked up the Emmy in Outstanding New Approaches Drama Series.
While the Daytime Creative Arts Emmys honor those working behind the scenes, the 42nd Annual Daytime Emmys for those in front of the camera will air live on POP tomorrow, Sunday, April 26 at 8pm ET/5pm PT. Check out the nominees here.
