On May 17, thousands of advocates and LGBT allies form around the world celebrating the International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia in an attempt to draw the attention to the violence and discrimination experienced by LGBT people internationally. As part of GLAAD's Global Voices program, which works to accelerate LGBT acceptance across the globe, GLAAD is participating in and celebrating IDAHOT together with thousands of diverse groups and individuals. Beginning on May 1, we continue to give you 17 reasons, one every day, why May 17 matters. We invite you to create and share your own, via the hashtag #May17Because and amplify the voice for LGBT equality.
IDAHOTB Rule Number 3: You don’t' have to be gay to fight homophobia.
It takes more than just the LGBT community to speak up for LGBT people around the world. This is why straight allies and advocates of LGBT people should also voice acceptance. Many straight celebrities, politicians, and religious leaders have proven that being straight doesn't necessarily equate being narrow. Join Kerry Washington, Vanessa Hudgens, and other straight allies. Support the LGBT community by joining GLAAD's #GotYourBack campaign. When LGBT people and allies speak out, hearts and minds open. Your voice is critical to increasing the acceptance of LGBT people. Speak out now and show the world the importance of LGBT acceptance.
