Every week, The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBT-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.
1) Unfreedom hits theaters in New York and Los Angeles today before rolling out to additional cities beginning next Friday. The film bounces between New Delhi as one young woman attempts to escape an arranged marriage to a man be with her girlfriend and New York where a religious extremist attempts to silence a liberal scholar. 2) Gravitas Ventures has bought North American rights for Addicted to Fresno which reunites But I'm A Cheerleader director Jamie Babbit and star Natasha Lyonne. Lyonne plays a lesbian hotel maid, Martha, whose sex addict sister Shannon (Judy Greer) returns to town after a series of bad decisions. When the sisters accidentally kill a hotel guest, they're forced to examine their unhealthy co-dependent relationship. Addicted to Fresno has a planned fall 2015 release.
3) Wolfe Releasing has purchased U.S. distribution rights for the romantic comedy Portrait of a Serial Monogamist for a likely release in late 2015 or early 2016. The film follows fortysomething TV producer and serial monogamist Elsa as she feels restless and breaks up with her longtime girlfriend to pursue a younger woman. After she gets the date she was after, she begins to see that she may have broken up with her soulmate. Portrait will make its world premiere at the Inside Out LGBT Film Festival in Toronto on May 31.
4) Netflix has renewed the half-hour comedy Grace and Frankie for a second season just weeks after the season one premiere thanks to support from some big name fans including Miley Cyrus and Shonda Rhimes. The show focuses on archenemies Frankie (out actress Lily Tomlin) and Grace (Jane Fonda) who find their lives changed completely and permanently entangled after their husbands Sol and Robert (Sam Waterston, Martin Sheen) announce they are in love with each other and plan to marry. You can watch all 13 episodes of Grace and Frankie's first season on Netflix now.
5) Author Patricia Highsmith's Ripliad five book-series is being adapted for television. The series follows bisexual con man Tom Ripley who schemes his way into high society and was also the subject of the 1999 film The Talented Mr. Ripley. Another of Highsmith's novels, The Price of Salt, was adapted for the film Carol which premiered at Cannes Film Festival this month and won the 2015 Queer Palm Award (a prize awarded to the best film with LGBT content) and star Rooney Mara tied for Best Actress.
6) Tony-nominated musical Fun Home will be touring nationally in the 2016-17 season! Fun Home, nominated for 12 Tony Awards, follows lesbian cartoonist Alison Bechdel's coming of age in three periods of her life, and her particularly complicated relationship with her closeted father. Casting and dates will be announced shortly.
7) The first three episodes of the new web series Sessions with Agnes & Estelle are out on YouTube now, starring Beth Robbins (All My Children) and Susan Sommer. The series follows an older lesbian couple in two to three minute episodes as they tackle new issues with current episodes covering marriage, the history of their long relationship, and making friends online. 8) The new film At The End of The Day is seeking funding help to cover filming costs. The film follows Dave, an anti-gay psychology professor at a small Christian college, who struggles to find meaning in his life after moving home following losing his wife and practice. The college has plans for an expansion, but the building they need has been willed to a local LGBT support group which Dave inadvertently becomes part of when he tries to spy to monitor the group's progress in raising funds to cover the taxes necessary to keep the land. As Dave gets to know the group, he begins to question his beliefs and realizes the world isn't as one dimensional as he'd thought. Find out more at At the End of the Day's Kickstarter page.
