After months of pushing from the LGBT community and declarations of support from prominent Democratic office-holders, the DNC’s platform draft committee has approved language adding marriage equality to the party platform. In addition to supporting marriage equality, the platform draft, which was approved this past Sunday, also reportedly contains language supportive of the Employment Nondiscrimination Act and rejects DOMA.
Barney Frank (D-Mass.), who recently married his longtime partner, Jim Ready, said “there was a unanimous decision in the drafting committee to include [marriage equality] in the platform.” Representatives of LGBT organizations and individuals testified in front of the 15 member Democratic Party platform drafting committee.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi broke with the DNC in January in order to lead the party to include marriage equality in its platform. The Washington Blade reports the draft will be presented in a more final form to the full platform committee in August, then approved before the Democratic National Convention in September.
