GLAAD supporters take a stand against Chick-fil-A’s anti-gay antics
GLAAD drew widespread media attention to the southern-California-based group Youth Empowered to Act (YETA), which staged a protest in opposition to fast food chain Chick-fil-A’s recent statements against marriage equality. GLAAD continues to shine light on the company’s anti-gay stance, helping to raise awareness around similar protests taking place around the country, including ‘National Same Sex Kiss Day at Chick-fil-A,’ organized by Carly McGehee. Remembering historic LGBT figure Sally Ride
GLAAD remembered trailblazing astronaut Sally Ride and drew attention to her place as not only the first American woman in space, but also the first LGBT person. GLAAD’s Religion, Faith & Values team also worked with Michael Adee of More Light Presbyterians to offer a fuller and more nuanced portrait of the late Sally Ride, placing an op-ed in The Washington Post highlighting the Ride family’s support of one another and their work for LGBT justice in the Presbyterian Church. Victory! FL Lt. Governor apologizes after anti-gay comments
GLAAD and Equality Florida launched a Change.org petition, calling on Florida Lt. Governor Jennifer Carroll to apologize for homophobic comments suggesting LGBT people look a certain way. Through the media, GLAAD helped dispel harmful stereotypes and spoke out about the rich diversity of the LGBT community. Carroll soon apologized, saying “It is wrong and inexcusable to make a comment that hurts people, and that was not my intention.” Read more.
GLAAD points to harms of DOMA in Spanish-language media
After U.S. federal officials denied permanent residence to 5 undocumented Americans married to U.S. citizens, GLAAD’s Director of Spanish-Language Media spoke to the Colombia-based international news network NTN24 on the harms caused to gay couples by DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act) and also the importance of marriage equality. NTN24 is owned by media powerhouse RCN and the news program is seen in Latin America and the United States.
