Does Religious Liberty Mean Bullying Your Own Flock of Believers?

$

This column, by GLAAD's Director of Religion, Faith & Values, Ross Murray, is being cross posted in Huffington Post Religion

When the issue of marriage equality is raised, one of the most common objections raised by the anti-LGBT crowd – and one of the most ironic - is that it will violate religious liberty.

The most common promulgators of this “religious liberty” argument are the Roman Catholic hierarchy. The most recent Roman Catholic bishop to warn of such "attacks" is Bishop Joseph Tyson, the Catholic bishop of Yakima, Washington. In a speech opposing Referendum 74, which will affirm the marriage equality law passed by elected officials earlier this year, Bishop Tyson says:

Recent attacks on churches, businesses and nonprofit organizations that express their conscientious objection to the redefinition of marriage underscore this danger. Those who uphold families based on the permanent, faithful relationship between a married man and woman as the best environment for raising children already have been accused of hate speech, and the right of religious institutions to freely practice their faith has been abridged.

This argument is not isolated. The Roman Catholic hierarchy has been using similar language in Minnesota, Maryland, Maine, New Jersey, and California, just in recent weeks. The imagery is of a church under siege by outside LGBT forces, which are hell bent on destroying the faith of the church.

What is not being shared in these fear mongering speeches is that much of the public's support for LGBT people actually comes from within the Roman Catholic Church. Roman Catholic people, the ones who go to church, who pray, who practice their faith on a daily basis…these are the ones who support marriage equality. It is faithful Catholics, by over 70% who believe that civil marriage should be lawful in America.

The Bishops don’t acknowledge Catholic supporters of marriage equality. But they are taking swift and punitive actions against them. Just within the past year, we have seen such actions taken against faithful Catholics:

  • Steav Bates-Congdon of North Carolina and Al Fischer of Missouri, were fired from their jobs at Catholic schools. Their offence? Holding weddings with their long-term partners.  Both men were openly gay without any objection from their parishes until they prepared to make a deeper commitment to their partners.
  • In 2010, Archbishop John Nienstedt, who is currently leading the effort to pass the anti-marriage equality amendment in Minnesota, told a mother that choosing to support her child over the political position of the Church could endanger her salvation. Archbishop Nienstedt also has threatened any priests who do not support the marriage amendment with termination.
  • Trish Cameron, a straight Catholic school teacher in Moorhead, Minnesota, wrote in her self-evaluation that she did not always support the Roman Catholic position on issues like the promotion of the anti-marriage equality constitutional amendment, but that she would never express her personal opinions in class. The response? She was fired.
  • Archbishop John Myers of Newark New Jersey said that marriage equality supporters should not receive communion. Similar threats have been made against equality-supporting Catholics in Minnesota and California.
  • Barbara Johnson was denied communion at her own mother’s funeral because she was a lesbian. The priest also walked out of the sanctuary while she gave her eulogy for her mother and refused to attend the burial. He has since been removed for abusive behavior toward his colleagues, not for refusing communion.
  • The persecution and condemnation doesn’t even stay contained within Roman Catholic circles. Episcopal Bishop Marc Andrus wrote an open letter to the incoming Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone, recognizing that the two leaders differ on the issue of marriage equality, but that he hoped that the two would be able to work together. In response, Bishop Andrus was refused seating and literally detained by church personnel  at Cordileone’s installation service, and was not permitted to be with other ecumenical leaders.

Contrary to the idea that Catholics suffer from outside forces when marriage equality becomes a reality, the Roman Catholic hierarchy is causing undue suffering to LGBT Catholics, and is actually impeding on the religious liberty of those who might support them.

I write this, not as a Catholic, but as a Lutheran, a denomination borne out of frustration by misguided campaigns and grabs of power by the Roman Catholic hierarchy. Luther’s critique of the hierarchy’s assertion of relevance and control has more than a few parallels to the situation we find ourselves in today. And that gives me hope that not all is lost. Reformation is possible.

The Roman Catholic Church is a powerful institution with the ability to alleviate a lot of the pain and suffering that exists in the world. It is a shame that it is losing its relevance by wasting energy on misguided campaigns like this. Doing so, coupled with the internal persecution of LGBT supporters is only alienating its own believers.

However, I still believe that there is still the ability for the Roman Catholic Church to add a positive contribution to the public LGBT conversation. Catholic lay people are already doing it. They are loving and supporting their fellow Catholics. They are going purple for Spirit Day. They are bringing good news to the least of these in their words and actions. The hierarchy just needs to follow their lead. Then, people will know the love and the grace of God.

#SpiritDay: 19 Days of Action to stand up to bullying - Day 13

Spirit Day is almost here. On October 19, millions of Americans will once again wear purple in a stand against bullying and to show their support for LGBT youth.

This year, GLAAD is counting down to Spirit Day with 19 Days of Action – quick and easy steps you can take each day to help stand up to bullying.

Ready to get started?

#SpiritDay: 19 Days of Action – Day 13, October 13, 2012

Get your purple American Apparel gear! On #SpiritDay, purple, the color that represents 'Spirit' on the rainbow flag, is worn in support of LGBT youth. Until October 19, you can receive 10% off any purple item you order from American Apparel when you enter the promo code: SPIRIT. An additional 10% of the proceeds your purple purchases will be donated to GLAAD!

In June this year, American Apparel teamed up with GLAAD and released a new line of tees in honor of LGBT Pride Month and featured its first openly transgender model in its ad campaign. GLAAD worked with AA to cast the ads, which featured openly transgender model Isis King and current and former GLAAD staff members. 15% of all proceeds from that line would benefit GLAAD's work, and AA employees joined GLAAD staff in LGBT Pride marches across the country. American Apparel's efforts resulted in positive visibility for transgender models like Isis and earned media attention in fashion and mainstream press for LGBT Pride Month, and its LGBT Pride 2012 campaign was nominated for a GLAAD Amplifier Award.

Another way to celebrate Spirit Day is to encourage the presidential candidates to come out against bullying by signing a new petition asking them to wear purple on October 19th for Spirit Day.

The petition was created by Katy Butler, Spirit Day Ambassador, who previously created a Change.org petition calling on the MPAA to change the rating of BULLY from ‘R’ to ‘PG-13’. The rating was finally changed, helping bring this important film to young people across the nation.

Sign Katy's new petition now!

Guest Post: Students at Radford University take a stand against bullying for #SpiritDay

The following post was written by Spirit Day ambassador Jordan Addison:

The students of Virginia’s Radford University are taking a stand and letting the community know that they don’t like bullying.  After several students were bullied because of their sexual orientation, the students have banded together to create an event that is sure to make the bullies second guess their actions.

On October 19, the students of RU will be hosting an Anti-Bullying Rally, fittingly on Spirit Day.  The event is being held on the University Campus beginning at 4 PM.  The campus’ central lawn will be decorated with purple balloons, tables, and banners.  Student volunteers will also wear purple, the color of Spirit Day.

The students plan to combine fun times with serious ones.  There will be several inflatable sports games, and inflatable boxing ring, an obstacle course, as well as carnival games.  Speakers from as far away as Minnesota are coming to speak about the effects of bullying, and what we can do to prevent it.

The event came to my mind as a way to use my positive publicity as the Spirit Day Ambassador to bring awareness to our campus.  However, I couldn’t have done everything on my own.  A multitude of student organizations stood up to back this idea and make it a reality.  The Student Government Association, Alpha Phi Omega, Alpha Sigma Tau, Sociology Club, The Gay-Straight Alliance, Spectrum, Safe Zone, Men of Standards, La Sociedad Hispanica, and the Peer Health Educators are sponsoring the event.  Each organization will be volunteering to make sure things run smoothly, as well as setting up tables to talk about the effects that bullying can have.  The tables will be stocked with statistics, friendly faces, and pamphlets ranging from where to go if you’re being bullied to how to report bullying.

Purple ribbons will be passed out all day, as well as raffles for purple shirts and banners.  Purple flowers will be available for purchase.  Local businesses have donated raffle prizes, with all proceeds going to programs to put a stop to bullying.

Occasions in which college students band together for a cause are not so common, especially at a small school of 10,000.  In the face of adversity, these students have pulled off the impossible, all in less than three weeks.  I’ve never been more proud of my student body.  Such a diverse group of students coming together for something so controversial makes one feel the warmth of hope seeping through all the doubt.

Ohio Superintendent Tells Mom Jennifer Tyrrell that #SpiritDay is "Not Our Fight." Join Her Today and Support LGBT Youth in All Schools!

#SpiritDay Ambassador Jennifer Tyrrell is showing her support for LGBT youth and taking a stand against bullying in her local community of Bridgeport, Ohio. However, not everyone is doing their part to share the important message of Spirit Day with those most affected by bullying.

Jennifer reports that Bridgeport School District Superintendent Ted Downing is refusing to ask students to wear purple this Friday for Spirit Day, claiming that he is concerned people will read more into it when they see “LGBT.” Downing also remarked that Spirit Day is “not our fight” and that Jennifer would have to take the matter up with the entire school board, which does not meet until after October 19.

You can join us for Spirit Day by RSVPing on Facebook to wear purple on October 19 and going purple today on Facebook and Twitter.

Jennifer and others in Bridgeport are disappointed by Superintendent Downing’s refusal, but it has no bearing on whether students and faculty can wear purple on October 19. A new Facebook event started by Jennifer is informing Bridgeport schools about Spirit Day and how they can go purple on this Friday to show support for LGBT youth and stand against bullying!

Jennifer’s efforts to engage her community are already gaining support! The Ohio Valley Roller Girls, a roller derby league that brings together girls from all walks of life, are showing their purple and are excited to support LGBT youth and stand against bullying on Spirit Day!

Yesterday MTV.com said that Jennifer is ‘most definitely a leader’ and we agree!

Unfortunately, this is not the first time Jennifer has faced those who refuse to show support for LGBT youth. Once the den leader of her son Cruz’s Çub Scout Pack, Jennifer was removed from her position in April because she is gay. With support from GLAAD, she started a petition on Change.org calling for a change to the Boy Scouts of America’s discriminatory ban on gay scouts and LGBT youth.

The petition gained more than 300,000 signatures and generated national media attention around Jennifer’s story and the stories of countless Boy Scouts who have been rejected by the BSA because of who they are. Jennifer has continued to advocate for change in the BSA, and now she is joining millions of Americans this Friday who are going purple to show support for LGBT youth and take a stand against bullying for Spirit Day.

Find out more about how you can join Jennifer to go purple for #SpiritDay at www.glaad.org/spiritday!

Latino Organizations Proudly Support #SpiritDay

Over a dozen Latino organizations are participating in Spirit Day this year, ensuring that the message of acceptance and respect for LGBT youth and the community as a whole is reaching as many Americans as possible.

Among those participating are the National Council of La Raza (NCLR), League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC), and Familia es Familia, a first-of-its kind, comprehensive public education campaign aimed at creating strong LGBT allies within Hispanic/Latino communities across the country.

Also participating are the Latino Equality Alliance (LEA), a Los Angeles-based coalition of LGBT Latino and ally organizations;  Bienestar, a Southern California health and social services center serving the LGBT Latino community and people living with HIV/AIDS; the Latino GLBT History Project, a Washington, DC-based organization that preserves and provides education on LGBT Latino history; and HONOR PAC, which supports candidates and ballot propositions that advance progressive policies and serve the unique needs and interests of Latina/o LGBT communities.

Studies from the last few years have shown that Latinos lead the way in terms of support for LGBT issues in this country, and thanks to the work of these organizations, support is increasing.

Here are just a few of many notable moments of Latino organization support for LGBT issues in 2012:

  • May/June 2012: National Latino organizations LULAC and NCLR publicly endorsed marriage equality and publicly support LGBT issues.
  • July 2012:  A coalition of 22 Hispanic/Latino organizations launched Familia es Familia, a bilingual campaign aimed at building support for LGBT equality within the Latino community, by providing culturally appropriate resources and information to empower voices within and from Latino families and communities).
  • August 2012: After a more than 18-month long campaign, the National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC) and GLAAD announced the permanent removal of “José Luis Sin Censura" – a far worse Spanish-language version of  Jerry Springer that for several years aired virulent anti-gay, anti-Latino and anti-female content on the Estrella TV network.

The rest of the participating Latino organizations are:

National Puerto Rican Coalition (NPRC), Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI), Mexican American Legal Defense & Educational Fund (MALDEF), the U.S. Hispanic Leadership Institute (USHLI), Labor Council for Latin American Involvement (LCLAA), National Hispanic Medical Association (NHMA), SABEResPODER, Southwest Voter Registration Education Project (SVREP), and the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC)

This year, country music is standing up against bullying by going purple for Spirit Day 10/19! Country royalty Reba McEntire, whose new sitcom, Malibu Country, premiers on November 2 on ABC, tweeted  and posted on Facebook about her support on Tuesday. McEntire said,

McEntire isn’t the only figure in country to go purple for Spirit Day: Country Music Television (CMT) announced it would be showing support for LGBT youth and standing against bullying.

More and more, country music has been standing up for LGBT people. In June, Carrie Underwood spoke out in favor of marriage equality during an interview with U.K.'s The Independent. Underwood said, "As a married person myself, I don't know what it's like to be told I can't marry somebody I love, and want to marry. I can't imagine how that must feel. I definitely think we should all have the right to love, and love publicly, the people that we want to love."

GLAAD launched a #supportcarrie campaign on Twitter to show Underwood that her fans appreciated her standing up for equality.

Singer Dolly Parton has also been a longtime supporter of LGBT people. She presented Robert Greenblatt with the Stephen F. Kolzak Award at the 22nd Annual GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles (watch the video below)

For more than 25 years, GLAAD has transformed attitudes and promoted equality by sharing the stories of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, including Chaz Bono. Facebook launches new bullying awareness resource and video, kicks off participation in #SpiritDay 10/19

Just one day before participating in Spirit Day, Facebook launched a new bullying prevention resource page and a new video for Bullying Prevention Month. The new resource is located within the Facebook Safety Center.

Spirit Day, held this year on October 19, is an annual day during which participants go purple -- both online and offline -- to support LGBT youth and stand against bullying. Facebook kicked off Spirit Day by turning its Facebook Diversity page profile photo purple and posting this status:

Spirit Day participants turning their Facebook profile photos purple and wear purple to school or work on Friday, October 19.

As announced earlier, Facebook will be supporting Spirit Day by turning select national pages purple, including Facebook's StopBullyingSpeakUp, Diversity and Safety pages, as well as encouraging employees at offices around the world to wear purple on October 19. Facebook has participated in Spirit Day since 2010, when an event page was created to promote the first Spirit Day, attracting hundreds of thousands of RSVPs. GLAAD worked with Facebook to remove hateful comments and images posted to the event page. In 2012, Facebook became the first social media company to be receive a GLAAD Media Award.

The resource launched today is the latest way in which Facebook has demonstrated its strong commitment to supporting its LGBT users and preventing bullying. In June Facebook added same-sex icons for married couples.

From Facebook:

The page being launched today builds on our commitment to keep people safe online by offering new and existing resources in one convenient location. A few new features include:

Social Resolution – New Experience and New Video – Facebook launched social resolution in March 2011 to enable people to report bullying and harassment to trusted friends and others in the community, on and off of Facebook. Since then we have been collaborating with academics and researchers in compassion and conflict resolution to improve our social resolution product.

We Are All Daniel Cui Video– We are featuring the powerful story of how a high school used Facebook to stand behind a classmate who was being bullied. We think this is one of many great case studies that demonstrate how to handle a potential bullying situation.

PACER Center’s School Event Guide –This month we partnered with the PACER Center to create a guide for students and educators to host anti-bullying event at their schools.

During Bullying Prevention Month and with Spirit Day this Friday, these new resources come at an important time.

"When young people find a sea of purple profile photos and supportive voices on their favorite websites and apps, it sends a powerful message that it's okay to be who you are," said GLAAD president Herndon Graddick. "Tech giants like Facebook and Yahoo! are leading the way in taking steps to address bullying and bringing Spirit Day's message to young people year round."

In an unprecedented show of support, the six most prominent American major sports leagues -- The National Basketball Association (NBA) / Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA), National Football League (NFL), National Hockey League (NHL), Major League Baseball (MLB), Major League Soccer (MLS) and NASCAR's diversity program -- will all ‘go purple’ with GLAAD for Spirit Day on Friday, October 19, in a stand against bullying and to show their support for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth.

You can join us for Spirit Day by RSVPing on Facebook to wear purple on October 19 and going purple today on Facebook and Twitter.

The six leagues will send messages of support on Spirit Day to bullied LGBT youth via Twitter and Facebook. The leagues join athletes like Shaquille O'Neal and Terrell Owens who have already pledged to ‘go purple,’ and influential sports organizations, including the GLAAD Amplifier Award-winning "You Can Play" project, GLAAD partner Athlete Ally, GO! Athletes, and UK Rugby champion Ben Cohen's StandUp Foundation. World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), like the NBA, will be taking part in Spirit Day for the second consecutive year. USA Track & Field will also participate by providing support through social media. All 30 MLB teams will post special #SpiritDay purple versions of their logos on Twitter.

These leagues join other Spirit Day participants including the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign and Vegas strip, MTV, and celebrities including Ricky Martin and Reba McEntire!

This is the latest development in what's been a remarkable year for LGBT support in the sports world.

Just last week, I was incredibly proud to join GLSEN's Director of Education Robert McGarry at a Diversity in Sports Symposium hosted by the NFL in New York. GLAAD was honred to speak about LGBT issues in sports before an audience of executives from every major-league sport, as well as the NCAA, sport organizations like the USTA and US Swimming, and athletic departments from several colleges and universities. We had a frank and honest dialogue about the importance of athletic leagues, teams and individuals showing support for LGBT inclusion proudly and in public ways, the value of always keeping a dialogue open, and the challenges that still exist in the world of sports, despite the amazing progress that's been made over the last few years. The topic of LGBT issues in sports was not just present in our talks. Every preceding speaker and panel discussion included LGBT issues alongside other issues like race, religion, gender, ethnicity, disability and economic background. Pioneering sports sociologist (and architect of the Olympic Project for Human Rights) Dr. Harry Edwards opened the symposium by speaking about LGBT issues as the future of true diversity in sport.

GLAAD thanks every league, team, and individual who has shown a commitment to making the world of sports a safe space for LGBT athletes and fans alike. That commitment will be on full display tomorrow during Spirit Day. See who else is going purple for Spirit Day here.

Join us for Spirit Day by RSVPing on Facebook to wear purple on October 19 and going purple today on Facebook and Twitter.

You can also get involved by downloading GLAAD’s Spirit Day resource kit, which contains tools to help turn your community purple in a stand against bullying. Spirit Day participants can also spread the word by telling their friends that they’re going purple on 10/19. Or, you can text PURPLE to 80888 to donate $5 to support the important work GLAAD,GLSEN and The Trevor Project do every day to end bullying and support LGBT youth.

Over a dozen sports organizations have signed on to go purple for this year’s Spirit Day, helping ensure that the anti-bullying message is seen and heard around the country by fans of basketball, baseball, soccer, tennis, wrestling and racing.

In addition to the NBA, WNBA, MLB, MLS, NASCAR Diversity, NHL, USA Track & Field and WWE there has been a wide range of Spirit Day passion from LGBT sports leagues across the country. Among the groups is the National Gay Basketball Association, an organization that links together dozens of local teams, which will go purple in support of Spirit Day on 10/19. The Chicago Metropolitan Sports Association, the largest non-profit gay sports organization in the Midwest, is encouraging their network of athletes to wear purple flair at games during this whole week. Additionally, the international organization that manages and sanctions the gay tennis circuit, the Gay & Lesbian Tennis Alliance, is urging their supporters to go purple through social media and on their website.

Lambda Basketball in Los Angeles and the New York Ramblers (soccer) have also pledged to bring attention to Spirit Day and its anti-bullying message. Check out our Spirit Day partner page to see the complete list of organizations that are going purple.
