Actress Zoe Saldaña recently gave countless lesbian and bisexual women heart palpitations (we suspect) afterAllure magazine released a tidbit from her cover story for the June issue where she said she would have no problem raising a child with another woman.
During an interview on CNN en Español's entertainment show Showbiz, the actress discussed what she considers her androgyny and growing up in a family that taught her not to pay too much attention to traditional notions of race or gender roles. "I was taught I could be whomever I wanted to be. In fact, up to this point, I've been attracted to the male gender but if someday I wake up and decide I want to raise a family with someone of the feminine gender, that's what I'll do."
Saldaña co-stars in the film Star Trek Into Darkness and has starred in Colombiana and other major films. The Dominican-American actress participated in a GLAAD PSA several years ago, along with Sofia Vergara and Eduardo Xol. You can watch it on: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OiJVxbd9WD4
On Showbiz she discussed the importance of artists embracing and expressing both their masculine and feminine sides, and for society to allow boys and girls to be able to express themselves in ways outside of traditional gender roles; that is, for boys to be able to express their feminine sides and for girls to embrace their masculine sides.
In the interview, Saldaña also expressed that while very proud to be Latina, there were a few areas where the community could do better, such as equality between men and women, respect for sexual orientation, more respect for people with Indigenous and African roots within the Latino community.
