Every week, The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBT-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.
1) The Sundance hit Dope opens in theaters this weekend. The film follows Malcolm (Shameik Moore) and his two best friends, butch lesbian Diggy (Kiersey Clemons) and Jib (Tony Revolori); all scholastic achievers with a passion for 90s hip-hop whose lives are turned upside down when they discover a cache of drugs. Check out the Dope trailer below and look for show times near you.
2) Robin William's final film, Boulevard, has just released its first cinematic trailer. The film follows Nolan Mack (Williams), a married man who must confront his sexuality and look differently at his life when he meets Leo (Roberto Aguire), a troubled young man on his ride home. The film will make its theatrical release in New York on July 10 and will expand to other locations on July 17. Check out the Boulevard trailer below.
3) Sir Ian McKellen has reportedly signed a deal with French publisher Hachette to produce an autobiography. The memoir will go into detail on the actor's decision to come out as gay in 1988, as well as his childhood life and his time filming his now famous roles in the X-Men and Lord of the Rings films. McKellen was a co-founder of the LGBT advocacy group Stonewall in the UK. His new film, Mr. Holmes, is set for release in theatres on July 17th. Check out the trailer below.
4) The Showtime series, Penny Dreadful, was renewed for a third season this week. The British-American horror drama follows Vanessa Ives (Eva Green), Sir Malcolm Murray (Timothy Dalton), and Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett), as they deal with supernatural threats such as vampires and werewolves. In addition to the bisexual Chandler, the show also features the bisexual character Dorian Gray who found love this season with a transgender woman named Angelique. The nine episode third season will begin production in Dublin, Ireland this fall. Check out the second season finale on July 5.
5) Ellen DeGeneres has just announced on Twitter that her HGTV design show, Ellen's Design Challenge, will be coming back for a second season. The furniture design competition series follows six designers as they compete to showcase their skill in front of a panel of judges. DeGeneres is the executive producer of the show and throughout the first season made numerous guest appearances. To learn more about the show, check out the HGTV website.
6) American Idol alum and out artist Adam Lambert's new album hit stores this week. The Original High is Lambert's third album, and includes the already-released single "Ghost Town" and appearances by Tove Lo and Queen's guitarist Brian May. The new album is now available on iTunes to buy and you can check out the music video for "Ghost Town" below.
7) Halsey has just released a new video for her breakout pop single "Ghost." The video features Halsey in a relationship with another woman as they go through the ups and downs of a romance in a hotel room in Tokyo. When asked about the video Halsey said, "I wanted to see some representation of a lesbian relationship that wasn't over sexualized. Just two people in love-or at least they used to be." Halsey, who is openly bisexual, will release her full-length debut album Badlands on August 28. The album is available for pre-order on iTunes. Check out the "Ghost" video below.
8) Singer/songwriter Greg Holden has just released the music video for his new single, "Boys in the Street." The song and video tell the emotional story of the relationship between a father and his gay son as the father initially struggles with his son's sexuality before finally coming to acceptance. The song was originally written for a charity compilation album for the organization Everyone is Gay. Holden's album, Chasing the Sun, which features "Boys in the Street" is available to buy on iTunes now. Holden is currently touring with artist Ingrid Michaelson and will start his own European tour at the end of June. 9) The non-profit organization NewFilmmakers Los Angeles (NFMLA) will be celebrating pride month with its In Focus series, which will showcase films with LGBT themes. The event will take place on Saturday, June 27th in Downtown LA at the AT&T Center. The program will feature a series of short films, the documentary feature film Shunned about the trans community in the Philippines, and the narrative feature film, Kittens in a Cage.
